Transponder Key

Yesterday I bought a 2001 Prelude SH. The gentlemen only had one key and remote. Being proactive I am wanting to spare before I lose this one and have to deal with the trouble.

So I called ACE Hardware and they said "NOPE", Honda Dealership said "Give Me Your Wallet", and I said I wonder if anyone has experience with this on the forum I just registered for.

Apparently Honda says the car came with a Red Key that programs the transponder. Without that there is alot of money involved. Does anyone have any suggestions or DIY for this? I searched key in several areas and came up with nothing.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank You

Re: Transponder Key

Yes there is a red, learning key and you technically need it to program the new keys, but you should be able to have the honda dealer make you a new T5 key for about $50-75 even without the red key. If you want a red key get ready to shell out over 3-500 for a full set up.

Spock doesn't like being without his transponder.

I hope you find one so you don't end up like Spock.

I too saw several on Ebay but just wasn't sure if Honda would program it without the Red Key. I may have to try what you did and hope they are kind enough to help.

Fingers are crossed.

No, we have never really considered AAA. USAA really treats us nice and has always provided us with rental vehicles should we need them or lock out services.

Re: Transponder Key

These guys have sold hundreds of these keys and have a great feedback rating. Thinking about buying two of these and having the dealership program...hopefully.

Then I will need another FOB Remote. Looks like I can use two types. There is one with only two buttons for lock and unlock (my current remote) or there is one with four buttons; unlock, lock, option, and panic. ???

Re: Transponder Key

Quick update to all who responded. I was in Lowes Hardware today and they had a sign up about making transponder keys and they could test yours there. So they tested my black key there and they said they could make one from it. I also asked them if I brought in a blank transponder key and my key if they could cut one and code it for me and they said yes. So fuk the Honda stealership! My local one swears up and down they cant make one from the black key they HAVE to have the red key. I know what route im going.

Re: Transponder Key

Wow, that is great news...Lowes is about 1/2 a mile away. I am going there tonight since my keys just came in. I will keep you all informed of what actions I have to take to get my black key read and then the spare keys coded. Lowes will be my first stop. Thank you much for the update!!! Hopefully Lowes here in Colorado Springs can do this.

i believe brand new you got 2 black keys and 1 black valet key. you also got a red key that was the "learner" key. they could use the red key to program other transponder keys, as honda told me they could not use the black keys to make other keys. but everyone else says they can and will if you talk to the right dealership and/or person there. it also seems as if lowes will be alot cheaper.

My black key only works to start the car nothing else it will go in doors but not unlock. It will even go into the glovebox lock but not turn it. My gray key wont go into the glove or trunk lock

Absolutely correct. I stopped by Home Depot this weekend and sure enough they too have the new T5 Chip reader. The T5 transponder keys were running $40. I told the guy I had two I would like to get cut and programed and he said he would have to talk to the manager to cut a key not bought there....geeesh. Since I didn't have the keys on me I didn't try to beg them to help. Tomorrow I will have the keys on me and I will start off at Lowes then to Home Depot. I am thinking both places will say the same thing. Next will be to the Dealership after buying Synthetic transmission fluid for my Accord and a couple other things to show the Service manager I do shop there. Hopefully that will help him make the decision to help me. We will see. More to follow.

The Black key is able to be read by the T5 Reader. Having the Red key just makes it easier for coding all new keys. If you lose your last Transponder key you will be paying an arm and a leg to replace the indash reader for a new one and new keys. I know some of you are pretty smart on electrical ...just surprised no one has found a way around this..... perhaps a challenge to the electrical guys out there on this forum.

Similar to my 2009 Toyota Tundra Crewmax....the Air Injection Pumps were going out costing the owners $3500 in repair. There are 145 pages to the post on how to bypass the AIPs. Then with all of us writing a letter to toyota they extended the warranty on the AIPs to 10 years 150,000 miles. That took a couple years but even now I can bypass my AIPs since they don't do damn thing or I can leave them on and wait till after the warranty period then bypass them.

More to follow on my journey to get transponder keys coded.

Re: Transponder Key

Update: Any keys you buy off of Ebay are for PROGRAMMING ONLY! There is a difference between programming a key and "cloning" a key. I thought these keys I bought could be copied or cloned by Home Depot, Ace Hardware, Lowes etc. Nope, programming means they will be set like a Master Key and it has to be done at the dealership. Some locksmiths can do it but they charge just as much if not more than the dealership.

So the here is the deal. You buy a key for $6.00 off Ebay, and pay $60 dollars to have it programmed to your car...like another master key. If you have 1 or 3 keys the Honda dealership will still only charge $60. At least that is what I had to get done.

Home Depot, Lowes, and Ace Hardware can clone the key from your key that works and it too will cost you anywhere from $40-$70. The cheapest was Home Depot at $40. But that is only their key and one key.

Maybe the way you are wording it is confusing me so ill ask a simple question and ask for a simple answer. If I take a blank t5 transponder key and my black key that starts my car. Can they make me a key that will start my car? This is what i was lead to believe when i was in my local lowes atleast.

Re: Transponder Key

Lowes will not CLONE your key to the key you supply them. You have to buy the Lowes key in order for them to clone it. Due to security and insurance not one Lowes would clone from the keys I got off of Ebay. Furthermore the keys you get from Ebay or others are for PROGRAMMING purposes not CLONING. Lowes, Ace, Home Depot, and Honda can all clone your key with a key bought from them meant for cloning. If you want to program the key you have to go to Honda and they will spend about 1 Hour programing the key to the ECU, it will then be considered a Master Key. To me that is the way to go. The dealership will program any number of keys for the same price where as you have to buy 2 keys from the hardware stores and that will run you more than the programming from the dealer, and they wont be master keys.

Re: Transponder Key

You have a copy/cloned key. The transponders in the key you bought is able to only have the code copied to it. While other transponder keys have a chip that can only be programmed. Both keys work the same.

The Red Key originally included with the purchase of the prelude is considered a master key. If you lose it you can either clone a key with other keys that start the car or you can program a key to be a master, just not red.
