At what RPM do you shift at?

Sorry if this is a dumb question, I don't know that much about cars but I was wondering at what RPM do you guys go up to before shifting? I usually go to about 3-3500 but I read that in order for the VTEC to kick in, you have to go pass 5000. Is that hard on the engine?

Re: At what RPM do you shift at?

3500-4k unless Im low on gas haha. My vtec kicks in at 5400, stock is usually around 5500 and it does put some strain on the motor. That's why you burn oil when you hit it :D

Don't use vtec too often but when I do I always check my oil when I get to where I'm going lol

that's not why you burn oil. you burn oil because the stock piston rings with FRM sleeves in the block are terrible

Re: At what RPM do you shift at?

So I'm a little confused. What's the point of the VTEC if it requires you to go beyond 5000 RPM and put further strain on the engine?

Re: At what RPM do you shift at?

Ummm, in a perfectly running engine ... RACECAR

In traffic, economy. Other companies are catching up, but Honda is the originator.
BTW keeping shifts on any manual 2500-4000 rpm is easy on the engine. It's the tools that are in 1ST gear over revving the engine that makes your engine strained.

Twokexlv6coupe , 9,000 rpm? YOU DA MAN! I must spread word of Your legend!

Re: At what RPM do you shift at?

I drive a lot of twist country roads so gear changes are always in VTEC. Depending on what gearbox you have hitting 7.8K (the limiter) is needed to keep the engine in VTEC when changing gear.

Regularly driving at high rpm is only a problem if you dont keep a well maintained car!
