Well, prelude died on me :(

Well so much for making a thread earlier on how people drive their ludes. :/

Had family over the weekend and they were checking out the new lude. Took my uncle out for a ride and hit V-tec and drove it pretty hard. Well than about 15 mins after that, my other uncle wanted to drive it. Being a good nephew, why not? I let him drive it and all of a sudden right before my house the car just died. We tried restarting it and the engine would not turn over. I can't even really say the car was cranking. It's really just winding the whole time you turn the key. So tomorrow after my last day of school (YAY), I'm getting her towed and will be driving the Lexus until she gets fixed. We all came to the conclusion that it had something to do with the timing belt. My dad thinks its the timing belt tension and it probably broke or the belt came loose. I was pretty pissed but I mean its just a car and he's my uncle, can't stay mad. Ended up having a great day but I mean I don't get to drive the lude for at least I can say until about Thursday or Friday. I would take the engine apart but with my schedule I don't really have time. Any insight on what you guys think it might be would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Well, prelude died on me :(

Well put a socket on the crank pully and see if you can turn it over by hand. And take the timing belt cover off and see if the belt broke. If it did break, then more then likly your valves smacked the pistons. So a complete rebuild would be in your future. Sorry to hear Bout it bro. Thays why i dont let anyone drive my car family or not.

Don't be mad at your uncle, it was going to happen whether it was you or him. It's just easy to point the blame in his direction because you're angry.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

Your only solution now bro is bury her in the pet cemetery. Then you will have a Zombie Prelude!

Hopefully I don't need a rebuild. I don't really feel like going through the whole process. Besides, I don't think the timing belt broke. Otherwise it would be pretty obvious. Hopefully it's just something minor and she will be running again by the weekend.

Nah, I'm not mad at him anymore, never really was, I was just frustrated. Even if it was his fault in any way, I wouldn't be pissed at him.

Will do man. I'm very nervous/eager to figure out what is wrong. She gets towed tomorrow around 6 I'm assuming and I should know what's wrong with her on Wednesday. I have no one else to blame but myself. I'm pretty sure my hard driving was most of the reason why she stopped. Oh well, just another reason to bring out the Lexus! :)

But I will keep you guys updated

Re: Well, prelude died on me :(

Timing belt has my vote. How many miles does the car have? Don't keep cranking it til you know for sure because if it is the belt, you can still cause damage if you haven't already.

My timing belt broke, and the engine was fine. After I replaced it, 2 auto tensioners failed, causing the belt to come off the cam pulleys, and the engine was still fine. I was lucky I suppose, but that goes to say maybe your engine has a pretty good chance, too.

If it's the belt, do a manual tensioner conversion or look into the tensioner that Kaizenspeed sells rather than using the stock automatic tensioner. Be sure to compression test it after you get it all put back together.

Re: Well, prelude died on me :(

Pit falls of buying used cars. The thing runs just fine, you push it and you feel kinda stupid for killing it afterwards. Happens more than people admit. But, even with repairs, cheaper than new. Just take it easy and see what the damage is. If its bad, I say F20B+LSD! You could ask your uncle to pony up some money if it'll clear his conscious,LOL! Try at least!

The car has 161k as of now. The belt needed to get replaced soon anyways. Hopefully I haven't cause any damage yet. Or at least a huge amount of damage because I did crank it a few times for a good amount of time. Hopefully it didn't hurt anything. If it does turn out I need a rebuild, I may just end up selling the car and getting my toy earlier.

Re: Well, prelude died on me :(

Well guys, I didn't receive the best of news. To start my summer, I need a new engine in the lude. The timing belt broke and all the valves smacked the pistons. Rebuilding the engine would cost just as much or even more as to just buy a new engine and swap. I think I will just stick with the H22A and get the car running ASAP. I'm not to happy but then again, it is kind of a fresh start for the car.

Unless everything is completely f'ed up, just get new valves. Have a shop check your guides for straightness and distance. You can get a new set of valves for $200. If it messed up your guides, springs, pistons, might as well just replace the motor.

Re: Well, prelude died on me :(

UPDATE: Well guys, just purchased myself a new engine from a guy locally. H22A with 100k for $700. I think that was a pretty good deal considering other motors I saw for sale that weren't even any where near me. The engine is gonna get swapped out this coming week and should be done by the weekend. Hopefully a new exhaust is getting put on too. So basically the car is a new car, sorta. New engine, new paint, fresh wheels just put on wrapped in Potenza's, and hopefully a new exhaust. I hate the look of the stock exhaust with the twin tips. Not a big fan of those, never really have been. In the mean time, I'm driving the Lexus and cruising around town like a "boss." lol
