Icon5 greddy header..what the hell?

hey guys.. came across something weird today. I'm running a JDM H22 red top (type-s motor). I wanted to change the header and until I receive my vibrant (in about 2 months or so) I decided to go along with a greddy 4-2-1 with the collector mod (2.5") , the aim being to address my choppy top end. while the mechanic was taking off the stock header I could tell the primary pipes on the greddy were just a tad bit wider than my stock ones..but the secondary were a shocker.. posting the pics here..is this normal?! the greddy one is the one with the smaller openings (on the right). How does this make sense? the stock type-s header is better than the aftermarket greddy one? I mean i didnt expect gains of more than 2-3 whp but being worse off? or is it not all about the diameter? will dyno in it a couple of days but I just wanted to ask if the stock are supposed to be wider or did I just make me a booboo and slow down my car further.

second pic is the greddy one too, with the end cut off for a 2.5" pipe.

Re: greddy header..what the hell?

Diameter isn't everything when it comes to an exhaust....it's a common mistake that people think bigger is better...for the most part it is but to a point....at lower rpm's you want a smaller exhaust to force the burnt gases out of the exhaust rather than just lingering around...but at high rpm's you need a more open exhaust to get rid of the extra gases produced by the high rpms. stock exhaust usually are to restrictive but they are also designed to keep noise down. there is a reason why they make it that size...it's not just oooh i think this is a good size pipe to use. the real answer will come on the dyno tho.

Re: greddy header..what the hell?

hmm.. I suppose so.. cause due to the tiny difference its gonna make I couldnt tell. But I was told my exhaust note would change with an aftermarket header and it didnt the slightest. No difference in response that I could feel.. I just hope I havent lost a few wheel with this. But for the guys who have swapped out their stock header are the secondary pipes usually larger diameter wise anyway?

" stock exhaust usually are to restrictive but they are also designed to keep noise down. there is a reason why they make it that size"

thats just it..i was expecting those stock pipes to be smaller ..and when I saw that difference thought I may have harmed my top end more than help my flow issues with this header.

vibrant, hytech and other performance headers flows better than the stock so with them exhaust sounds drop little bit

type s exhaust is redesigned to be little bit better than the stock and greddy/dc/megan/ebay headers are just slight better than stock so theres no much difference between type s and those aftermarket ones

Re: greddy header..what the hell?

so in short do you think I may have caused restrictions with this header I installed judging from the picture?

Re: greddy header..what the hell?

njah, it just isnt any better than your previous stock header
no point really get any of those dc/megan etc headers if you have that type s one

Re: greddy header..what the hell?

first of all, If you have a genuine red top, then the stock header will be better than that greddy header. Alot of people dont know that the type s/euro r motors came with a header that had slightly bigger primaries and the manifold is completely cylinderical compared to the regular jdm black tops and usdm h22's. You should have kept that manifold since its pricey and is a really good manifold flow wise.

Keep the one that gives you the most horsepower and sell the other one.
