Why am I getting such high price quotes?

so I've been driving to diff autobody shops in the so-cal area getting estimates on painting my flush spoiler and getting it installed. It's pearl white so I realize it's a 3 layer process, but I didn't expect them to quote me so much..

I've been to 4 different places and from lowest to highest my quotes have been 420, 470, 494, 723 (lol).

the 723 was because they said that since they would have to drill a hole for the wire, they would then have to repaint my trunklid and replace the emblems due to inevitable rust.

anyway, I was expecting to pay $200 for this... is $400-500 reasonable and normal? Maybe the places I'm taking it to are really high-end IDK..

The 723 is no surprise... for what it involves at least

if the 420 was just for painting the spoiler...that's crazy. I would say it should cost around 300 tops. I was quoted to get an entire OEM lipkit, scuffed and painted CBM (all preludes have some form of pearl) for $500

What you need to do is go to harbor freight or any place that sells a paint gun and rent a compressor or buy a cheap small one. Get a can of honda pearl white paint and a can or two of clear coat and hang your parts like this:

Cover the spoiler once with the white then wet sand with a large grit (720) then again with a 1500 grit or so. Then go over it again with the pearl white, wet sand again with the 720 then 1500.

Now go ahead and go over it with a layer of clear - wet sand again 720 then 1500, do a 2nd clear coat wet sand again 720 then 1500. Do a 3rd clear coat and your deck lid would look better than the paint on your car right now. If there are imperfections wet sand again lightly with a high grit (the higher the grit, the smaller the sand) then hit with a polish or wax.

Also there should be ample drying time between paint coats. It must dry fully, I would recommend at least 12 hours in between for all layers to dry fully and allow you the ability to wet sand without messing up the layers already down.

Try JAT auto body in El Monte, Ca. Tell him Edwin with the purple prelude sent you. He does great work. He will probably charge you $200-$250

DOn't kill me for saying this, but what about Maaco?
I wouldn't trust them to paint my whole car, but one piece as simple as a spoiler, they might be worth looking into.

Re: Why am I getting such high price quotes?

Speed you fail....lol I wouldnt trust Maaco with a fender let alone a wing

and those quotes are bout right I know I used to charge around 450 when I was working in shops for things like that.

and Smok3y has the best idea in general just do it yourself its really not that hard just go buy a junk fender from a junk yard to spray so you can get the feel for the gun and know the spray pattern, and if you do great theres a new DIY for the begginers.

Macco can spray paint; a monkey could. They just can't prep for ****. Prep your part and take it to Macco.
