Need help with CEL!!!

My CEL came up about a month ago, checked it about after a few weeks of driving with it on and came up with fuel system codes and misfire codes. I reseted my PC last week to see which code pops up first. My CEL came on last night and checked it this morning this is what I found, One code 45 Fuel system. It can either be running too lean or too rich but most certain its too rich due to smelly fumes from exhaust and the tip being black and only getting 200 miles on a full tank. After research I couldn't fine much but people saying maybe EGR being clogged or a bad catlilic converter. The previous owner was really good at keeping her matintence records and passed them down to me she replaced the Cat August of 2010 and got her EGR that was clogged cleaned out December of 2010. The cat is too new to be having problems and the EGR was cleaned end of 2010 which I dont know if that was a long enough time for them to get clogged again. Also I get mixed comments of the o2 sensors causing the smelly fumes and some people saying that it doesnt cause smelly fumes. So my question is what is the problem? What do I need to fix? Thanks guys and sorry for the long post.

Re: Need help with CEL!!!

The EGR ports shouldn't need to be cleaned for at least another 100k

Could be an o2 sensor or bad sparkplugs - even sparkplug wires/cap and rotor. all reasonable in price if you need to replace them.

Easiest thing to do is check your spark plugs. I forget how to check the wires... start the car at night and look for electricity jumping between the wires? idr to be honest..

To check the cap and rotor - just pull off the distributor cap and have a peek (be sure to put the sparkplug wires back on in the right order!!)

After you inspect everything - have you considered doing a seafoam? if you do, be sure to change your oil afterwards (if you pour it in the oil) also, be sure you're on 1/4 tank of gas when you pour it in the gas tank. reset the code and drive around for a few days.

So if you check everything first, replace what looks bad - proceed with a seafoam followed by an oil change. (if you need to replace the spark plugs, i've read its advised to wait until after a seafoam, if you plan to do a seafoam that is)

Then consider replacing the o2 sensors (i'm not sure how to inspect/test those)

hope that helps!

Re: Need help with CEL!!!

To check the wires you need an ohm meter (checking for resistance) one lead on each end of wire, and to test the o2's...well have a shop do it with a scan tool haha. Anywho I would check to see when the last time the motor had a tune up done, it's always possible one of the ignition components can be a cause. I personally like to wait for the most Cels possible to help narrow down the verdicts.

Re: Need help with CEL!!!

Thanks guys. Let me look to see when was the last time she had changed the plugs but I know she put in brand new NGK wires. I do remember my dad saying the cap looks a little rough and might need changing. Let me try to find out when she last got a tune up.

Re: Need help with CEL!!!

Okay, according to the records she had. She did a full tune up, spark plugs, distributor and rotor November of 2010 and got new spark plugs in February of 2011. So the disturber itself is still good the cap may be needing replacement what about the rotor? Hows the average lifespan of them? Im going to check my spark plugs today.

if she replaced the cap and rotor already, you shouldn't have to worry about it for quite a few years (check it in maybe 50k lol)

Re: Need help with CEL!!!

I didn't have time this weekend to check them :( And wont during the week maybe Friday. But whats the average life span of them? I know they were NGK I don't know what kind though.

Re: Need help with CEL!!!

Okay!! So like I said I reseted my pc Friday and usually it takes weeks about 2-3 for the codes to pop back up again. Today while I was driving home I noticed my CEL popped up kinda confused cause it never comes back up this fast I checked it when I got home and got this code. #73 Random Misfire in cylinder 3. I've gotten this code before a while back but it has never came up so fast after a reset like this. Previous stated above EGR cleaned December 2010 and new distributor a month before that along with new spark plugs. Why is it doing this?

Re: Need help with CEL!!!

No idea, but you could try cleaning them. I've "heard" soaking them in a little seafoam will clean them, but have never attempted it myself to know how well/if it works at all.
