Popping noise from rear; not struts

Have a 2000 with 95k on it. Just put new coilovers on the car and thought that got rid of te popping noises from the rear that sounded like worn suspension. (Put coilovers on two months ago) Now as time goes by the noise it back and very loud from the passenger rear when going over small bumps and "uneven-ness" in the road. This morning it was a bit colder out and the noise was very loud. Once I got in the car later and the sun was out, the noise was very little if any. What could this be?? Pretty frustrated because I have been told that my struts were shot and to get rid of the clunking popping noise to replace the suspension so I did..... still loud. Any help? thanks!

Re: Popping noise from rear; not struts

First off - check your wheel bearings. This is usually the first thing to go bad in the rear of the car that can cause clunking and noise while driving.

Then check your bushings, a worn bushing or one that has torn off and just bouncing around will cause one hell of an annoying sound.

*edit*

also make sure your spare tire is secure and the jack isn't moving around.

I gotta agree with wing8806 on both counts. It may be wheel bearings, but check the obvious stuff first. Make sure the spare and jack are secure and not banging around. If all's good in the trunk, jack up the back of the car and shake the wheels and then spin them. If they rattle back and forth or there's a noticeable grinding noise when you spin them, get the bearings changed. Hope this helps.

I had a rear sway bar link that broke, and whenever I went over a bump, it clunked and made a popping noise. I checked underneath to see what could be causing it and the link was the culprit. And wala no more popping/clunk noise!

Re: Popping noise from rear; not struts

The rear bar links on the 97-01s are a strange design and rather dinky. They can fail, as they're basically two ball joints welded together via a 6 inch long rod. The ends of said links can become loose and make the same noise a ball joint would make over an uneven road. I would check those first, then make sure all the bolts are tight.

Re: Popping noise from rear; not struts

I have commented on this several times on this forum.
Under the rear seat is a brace. It is attached with 1/2 dozen bolts or so.
The bolts work loose and will cause knocks.
Remove the bolts and brace, clean, apply loctite the bolts and reinstall.
Good chance this will solve your knocks.

Re: Popping noise from rear; not struts

Maybe completely off but on my fourth gen, the right rear would pop when going down any type of incline or Bump. Ended up being upper ball joint.
