H23A1 into a 98 Base

Ok my wife found a 1998 Base model Prelude that somebody snatched the h22 and tranny out of. The guy also sold her an H23A1 engine and 5 speed tranny. What all besides modifying the a couple of the motor mounts do i need to do? Also the car didn't come with an engine wiring harness. Which harness do I need to find? Any info would greatly be appreciated.

Re: H23A1 into a 98 Base

ummm dont do that, yes you would have to change the mounts, they all use the same one, but you'll need a stock 1998 prelude harness, and modify it to that motor, and also gonna need to have it tuned.
orrrr you can get a jdm h22 or something similar(i went with a jdm h23 vtec) and it will bolt right it, and wont be a down grade.

Re: H23A1 into a 98 Base

wife is wanting it running yesterday and has been driving me nuts about wanting to drive it. Honestly i dont see any point in wasting a good h22 on a chick that doesnt have a clue as to what it is. i'm think h23 because i can either boost it or put an h22 head on it

Re: H23A1 into a 98 Base

Ok But... H22a4 is OBD II/ H23A1 is OBD I
Big problem unless you are doing the job yourself you will spend about as much in changing for the new parts than if you had just gotten a H22A4 and dropped it in.
Remember H23A1<H22A4
That's unless you install a H22 head then you make a H23 Vtec which is the best of both worlds.

Re: H23A1 into a 98 Base

Since you have done a few swaps that will help but have you ever done a OBD type of swap or were both cars OBD I when swapped out that B20b? OBD isn't Super hard but its a pain in the A##$ if you don't know what you are doing. Over all it won't be as hard for the tranny since its a manual and an auto so your good their but the engine harness will be hard to figure out but im sure you will need to the H23a1 harness since the H22A4 is meant to support Vtec which the H23A1 doesn't have.

Re: H23A1 into a 98 Base

i took an obd2 b20b, had it re sleeved and closed decked, installed forged internals and put a ported b18b1 head on it, used obd0 sensors from a 90 gs integra

Cool story bro.

Realistically, the H23 in a 5g prelude is ridiculous without going through big hassles... unless you can magically create an OBD II H23 non-vtec computer, lol.

Re: H23A1 into a 98 Base

Motor mounts don't need to be touched, since H22/5speeds from 5G's are a DIRECT drop-in to a 5speed chassis 4G, so vice-versa should be the same.

ECU shouldn't be a problem, just get a '96 H23 one.

Engine harness.... also get one for an OBD2 H23. Not 100% if all the connectors will fit to the chassis harness connectors in the engine bay tho. Since all 5G's had VTec, but H23a1's didn't.... not sure if that'll throw a wrench into the mix.

Re: H23A1 into a 98 Base

i have a jdm h22 that came from a 5th gen with no harness so im using my h23 one and my car is a 96.. the only plugs that were not the same was the knock and the o2 on the downpipe.. so wouldn't he just need to get them for the 5th and be able to run the 5th gen harness? but then what yr. is the h23 cause he will need the CPS if not out of the 96 unless he gos obd2-obd1 jumper right?
