Icon5 E-Brake Won't Hold

I have a 98 base and my e brake won't hold the car hardly at all. i have a stick so i'd like it to work. the guy who had it before me said that the mechanic said that the car needs new rear calipers and the e brake can't be adjusted. anyone had this happen or know of any other threads with some info on this?

Re: E-Brake Won't Hold

Dunno too much about this topic, but I had one of my rear e-brake lines replaced due to the cover snapping near the caliper, exposing the cable itself to all the snow and **** we get in Canada. Cable ended up rusting and seizing and wouldn't tighten when the e-brake was pulled. This is just my personal experience - I dunno anything about e-brakes, but maybe the same may apply to you? Hope this helps. Good luck!

I've also heard rear calipers however I've never had this problem so I can't say anything for sure.

Re: E-Brake Won't Hold

the mechanic is a liar. it's very simple to tighten the e brake. there's a write up on here somewhere. all you really have to do is take out he center console and adjust something

Re: E-Brake Won't Hold

Yup the mechanic lied. I need to do this myself as well but it`s simple. Take of console and look at the ebrake and theres a line with a bolt you adjust, kinda like on abike you take some slack of. You might need pads in the rear but that is most likely not the problem. Wit the wheels on you can check if your pads are almost out.

Before you guys call the mechanic a liar and jump to a conclusion with no diagnosing, please check these things first.....Number 1 check your rear brake pads, number 2, have someone pull and release the ebrake and watch to see if it is applying on the caliper(if not your cable is seized somewhere), number 3 make sure your calipers are not seized. I was told by my instructor that a metal does not stretch when I told that to him but, you never know. My ebrake is crappy too, check how many clicks your ebrake lever makes to somewhat hold. If it's like 8+ then you can try adjusting the cable.(I'm going to try this too)

Re: E-Brake Won't Hold

Thanks for the help guys. I got around to do it today and i pulled up the center console to find the adjuster. Tightened it a few turns and no problems. Holds great now. Pads in rear are pretty new and cables where just replaced before i got the car. No drag when it is released either. Thanks again for the help without the PZ community i wouldn't have been able to do half the stuff i have to my Lude.
