power steering leak.

i have a leak in my power steering and i have no clue where its comeing from.

i have one idea though, when i did my brakes the other day i noticed that one of the rubber boots on the pushrod that turns the wheel left and right was slightly ripped.

could fluid leak out of that?

Re: power steering leak.

I actually have the same thing. I saw a bunch of fluid all over the power steering belts and on teh right side of the hood. my power steering hose is whats leaking. if your engine bay is clean, then idk where else it could be

Re: power steering leak.

I had a leak back then. Turns out it was from one of the hoses near the front by the bumper. Illustraion #10 to be exact!! take a look around there if you said that there is no sign of PS fluids around ur engine bay and/or by your wheels.

Re: power steering leak.

This may be a dumb question, but I have to ask, im replacing that big ass hose at the top, the one that goes across the right side of the engine, I will need to drain all the fluid first?? then refill it all?? obviously not fill it all first, I just do not know if Its a must to drain fluid to replace that hose

Well, you don't HAVE to, but if you don't drain it first, you'll leak fluid all over the place. Just be sure to get all the air out of the system when everything is back together.

Re: power steering leak.

I've never seen the top hose that goes across the motor - actually spring a leak.

Are you sure that's your issue? could be as simple as replacing the o ring on the end vs buying a new hose. That line is much stronger than the others in the system.

Well it's too late now I already got a new one. There's OIL all over that hose by the head and on the belt and stuff, it's squirting from somewhere

Re: power steering leak.

Hey ledheadmatt10. Doesn't seem like anyone's answered your question. I think I'm having a similar problem on my '92S. Wife got home and said steering was wierd and hard. Went out to look and saw ps fluid on the driveway. Opened the hood and there was fluid all over the reservoir, the pump, the fender, etc, dripping down onto the driveway. Cleaned it up and looked for leaks. Couldn't find any anywhere, but noticed that the fluid level was above the max fill level on the reervoir. Very strange considering all that had "leaked" out. Popped the cap and found that the fluid was very aerated. So I figured that it was somehow getting air into the system and this had caused the fluid to be pushed out the cap on the reservoir (just a friction-fit seal). Something like this may be happening to yours if you still haven't found a leak.

Anyway, after several consults, all agreeing that it must be the pump, I replaced it. Of course, I hadn't checked with "Murphy" so this didn't fix the problem. Still pushing fluid out the cap (but not as much?). If anyone has had this problem & knows a solution it would be much appreciated!
