crank pully

My crank Pully is wobbeling badly. I went to advance but they don't have the bolt and washer I would need if it were stripped. They also don't have a torque wrench that does 180lbs/ft. I have several questions:

1. What size torque wrench do I need? Is it 3/4? And where could I get one cheapest.
2. Where could I find the bolt and washer? It's cool if I have to order it. But I know Honda dealership will charge me an arm and a leg for it lol

Re: crank pully

Wobbling crank pulley is most likely due to a worn keyway, so that's what you need to replace.

I just tighten mine with a 19mm socket, 1/2" breaker bar, and 6' cheater bar, and just use common sense to not over-tighten it.

Re: crank pully

I thought it had to be 180 ft/lbs? And I figured either that or the nut is stripped or the washer is messed up.

Re: crank pully

Its a very common problem on preludes, and 99% of the time its a worn key-way.

If you feel like going out and buying a brand new torque wrench, go for it.

Or you could apply a 180lb force (the average weight of a dude) on a breaker bar 1ft away from the axis of the crank.... boom 180lb-ft.
Or a 30lb force 6ft away from the axis.

Re: crank pully

I182....I hope I dont scare you with what im about to say but that also Nick would be a great help for his input. When I had my USDM motor that I too had a wobbling crank pulley. After removing the pulley that I saw the crank pulleys inner teeth were mostly grinded out and as for the keyway that one of the walls was so worn out that if you were to look at the crank shaft directly that it would form a CHECK MARK! Bustr then told me it would be a biitch to get the crank shaft and pulley changed bc you would pretty much have to open up the bottom end to pull the crank pulley and chaft off along with the pistons jus to change that pulley and crank to the new ones. Is that true?

That's why I drove that USDM motor lightly n in the mean time was in the market for another motor and stumbled upon a JDM one!

Re: crank pully

Its true. You better hope its only the key and pulley that are FUBAR'ed.
Cuz if you need to drop the crank, you'd be stupid not to do new bearings, piston rings, clutch & flywheel, water pump, t-belts and tensioners, and seals, since you need to tear it down that much.
And you better hope the cylinder walls are in good condition so the rings seat properly as well.

I'll cross my fingers for ya.

Trust me, an engine swap is easier than rebuilding a bottom end.

But lets not jump the gun here, take the pulley off and let us know how everything looks.

Which is why after hearing the bad news about the shaft n pulley issue that I was in the search for a motor and got lucky to land a JDM motor!! I then I guess you can say got even luckier when I decided to convert from AUTO to 5spd and landed myself that certain tranny off of a 4th Gen that has VTEC ratio gears! I can find out when I get home. Good part is I hit my VTEC like a snap, downfall is I hit my 5th gear quick n gas usage gets used almost as much as if I was AUTO!

Unless you have air tools, sometimes the bolt comes out with an air gun w/o that tool.

Re: crank pully

Nopeeee, its just on there @ 180ft-lb.

Just imagine putting 180lb's on the end of a wrench, 1ft away from the head; that's how much force is needed, sometimes more due to rust/corrosion, to break it free.

Re: crank pully

The threads on the bolt were a little messed up lol. The key was worn down and wore a bigger keyhole in the pulley.

Haha it was eroded as hell. We barely were able to grip it to get it out. Lol and the slot that the pulley has for the anyway is way bigger from grinding against the key. Is there a way to upload images to this site?

you gotta host them first, like on Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket or PutPhoto, then copy/paste the [img]URL[/img] code here.

Re: crank pully

I've found the OEM bolt on majestic Honda, but is there a longer bolt with the same thread pattern? Judging by the color on the bolt it was maybe an inch into the crankshaft. I would love if the bolt could go deeper in, if only to insure that it doesn't get loose again.

Re: crank pully

bump for info on the bolt?

i would just prefer something longer to hold in there better and hopefully not come loose again. also, the pulley has to be put back on a certain way right? I don't have any experience with the belt system at all.

Wow that's a tiny ass pic, can't see anything.

But you still haven't answered my question on how the keyway on the crank looks. If it's not good and you replace everything (minus the crank), you'll still have the same problem.

Re: crank pully

Yea I tried editing your post to fix the link, but fuked it up, sry
Try it again.

But yea you can try a new pulley/bolt/key, but don't expect much difference.
If they keyway that a key sits in is worn down so that it's significantly larger than the key and it can wobble... just imagine what it'll do if it starts spinning @ 7K rpm.

Re: crank pully

Oh! I thought key and keyway were the same thing, just different terms. But we had a hell of a time getting the bad key out! Lol it was good and tight. How about the longer bolt? Any knowledge on one? Could I.have a shop make one?

Re: crank pully

Haha the key is the rectangular piece that prevents the two pieces spinning on each other.

They keyWAY(s) are the rectangular cutouts on the crank and pulley that the key sits in. If the keyWAY(s) are worn and the key can move in there..... yea it'll wobble.

But it sounds like the keyway on the crank is good; that's good But the keyway on the pulley is FUBAR'd, which is NBD.

A longer bolt really won't do anything, I'm pretty sure the Honda engineers designed the correct length bolt for the crank. If you get a bolt that's too long, it won't even hold the pulley on. Just don't even worry about that.
