ok guys im not sure if any of you remember my post about my engine smoking and you guys said that if it was blue then it was oil. well i cleaned my engine compartment and change the valve cover and distributor oring and seal but now there is smoking coming from this spot on my engine.

Help me identify this please? v. PIC

sorry to the guy that im stealing this from but this is exactly where the smoke is coming from but more towards the back of it

Re: engine smoking

well there is no way smoke would be coming from the top of it. It could be residual on the exhaust or something on the back of the motor leaking, such as a pinched v/c gasket, oil cooler oring, oil pressure switch or oil pan gasket

Re: engine smoking

How did you timing belt look when you had the valve cover off?

Hard to tell, but i'd agree and say it could be something leaking onto your exhaust and burning off.

Re: engine smoking

i looked fine to me i made sure to check it because the mechanic i took it too said it should be replaced but it looks just fine. maybe my v/c gasket isnt on right. i will try to look at it tomorrow. any chance it could be the head gasket going out?

Re: engine smoking

Possible. You should have the water pump and timing belt as well as tensioner replaced around 90k and again around 180ish

Would hope that's not the issue - hows your coolant level? have you changed the oil lately and did it look milky? Anything under your oil cap?

Re: engine smoking

coolant level is good i thought i seen oil in it but not sure i have to take a look in better lighting. i need to change my oil i just haven't because i dont have the tools for it here at school but judging by the dipstick it seems ok. the guy i brought the car off of said the timing belt was changed at 100k and that the radiator was change at about 113k not sure about the water pump. and when i took off the v/c there was like burnt oil that was crusted on the top of the v/c.

Re: engine smoking

Did you spill anything on it? Ie, Oil or some other fluid?

Re: engine smoking

no but it is making a lawnmower smell it gets kind of strong if i hit v-tec or launch from a red light/ stop sign to fast. is it possible a leak under the v/c is occurring? besides the valve gasket? when i removed the vc it looked like there may have been extra oil in the but im not sure im a novice at car stuff. if its possible that something else is leaking then that would explain the smoke and smell

Re: engine smoking

Dont rule out the possibility that the VC gasket is worn around that back area and is spittin out droplets of oil causing it to drip down onto your piping and burning off? I'd have that VC looked at again as well as replacing the VC gasket with a new one and see from there?

Re: engine smoking

i just replaced it about a week or 2 ago so i cant be that. unless it fell off a little or got pinched between the vc and cams and is letting oil seep out that way. but i dont see any signs of it being pried up

Re: engine smoking

does it smell sweet? if it smells like burnt maple syrup its coolant. resulting in the head gasket being your problem. but also you would have a nice cloud of white smoke shooting out. ever seen uncle buck? lol
