Icon5 Problems: Vtec, ECT, Idle

First off im new to the forum here, but been around preludes for a long time. I have a 99 Prelude SH and my Vtec started to act up recently and as well as the idle. Everytime I start my car my Vtec works just fine until I stop/slow down then I watch my idle jump from 900rpm to 1500rpm, then vtec no longer works until the idle drops again which isnt until the car is turned off. I decided to check for some codes but the CEL never came on, and turns out the previous owner took out the bulb so I got a new one, only code it throws is the ECT, but I didnt think that should have anything to do with the Vtec. I have cleaned the solenoid and have checked the oil level a few times and everything looks good. No dents in the oil pan either. Also to note the car has never overheated and im planning on replacing the ECT sensor in the next couple of days (who knows how long its been bad). Any advice would be helpful, thanks in advance!

Re: Problems: Vtec, ECT, Idle

idle could be your idle air control valve or a vacuum issue.

I find it odd that the bouncy idle is giving an issue... Is it bouncing while at a stop or while moving as well?

Re: Problems: Vtec, ECT, Idle

Its not even bouncing, its like the idle changes it self as if your pressing the gas, and it doesnt drop back down to 900rpm until i let the car cool and restart it. (I know the idle bounce from my old prelude haha)

Re: Problems: Vtec, ECT, Idle

Pretty sure vtec depends on coolant temp as well, so if its not up to temp (or THINKS its not up to temp) it won't engage vtec.

Let us know the results of replacing the ECT.

Re: Problems: Vtec, ECT, Idle

One of the parameters vtec will look for to engage is engine coolant temp. So if your temp sensor is fubar then that could definitely be your issue. let us know how it goes!

Re: Problems: Vtec, ECT, Idle

Definetly check the coolant level first off and make sure that you are not low on coolant. Bleed the system to remove any air pockets(they can cause idle fluctuations). After that shoot for the engine coolant temp sensor.

Re: Problems: Vtec, ECT, Idle

Ok, so we replaced the TPS, and the ECT and everything worked for about a hour even with the engine warm, now it's back to the same problem. Also did a coolant flush

Re: Problems: Vtec, ECT, Idle

Ok, found out with a test that the new ECT sensor was bad from the factory, so installed another new one and everything works now! Even stopped the smoke coming from the exhaust. So just updating this so if anyone else
Runs into this problem. Thanks again for everyone's post!
