I stuck an extension and just unbolted it. A good turn got it off easily.

Re: egr removal so #%$ frustrated >:( w/ pic

i finally got the bolts off. had to use a shallow 12mm socket w/ extension connected to a breaker bar. i did soak it w/ pb but it didnt help much. the problem was that i didnt have enough torque with my current extension w/ only a 1/4" drive. i needed a 3/4" drive and more leverage. came off w/ one good push. my dumbass forgot about the egr gasket and now im waiting for it to come in the mail. i reassembled everything after cleaning the egr real good and the code cleared! i didnt even take out the plugs but im going to clean it out another weekend

look how filthy this EGR was.

I need to do this because I just failed my smog. Curiosity, cleaning the bottom part where the valve sits, just wipe even if a little of the gunk goes in the hole? carb cleaner is what to use right??

Re: egr removal so #%$ frustrated >:( w/ pic

the egr port plugs will be a pain to get out too without the right tools. i drilled a screw into each one and yanked it out the screw and plug with the back of a hammer. it might sound simple and easy, but it took alot of sweat and elbow grease... and one of the screws broke and dropped down into the intake runner. had to remove the top half of the IM to fish around with a magnet to get it out.... one of the scariest moments for me with my lude...

This. I had to remove my IM to get to the broken screws.
If you do go on removing your plugs, be very careful, and take your time.

I never have use for a slide hammer, so I didn't bother buying one, but it would of saved me a lot of time!

Re: egr removal so #%$ frustrated >:( w/ pic

I used a regular old prybar and some 1 1/2" self tapping sheet metal screws. All in all it took me about 2 hours to get it all apart, 30 minutes to clean, and like 45 minutes to put it all back together.

The only problem I had was for my second to last plug... I couldn't get my prybar in there without bending one of the studs for the fuel rail, so I ended up using an old style crowbar.

Don't be scared, just be patient. Spray the f*ck out of everything with carb cleaner once you're in there.

Re: egr removal so #%$ frustrated >:( w/ pic

I know this post is like 3 years old but its a good one, so inserting the new plugs... isn't that really difficult..cus the old ones are really tight. Do I just hammer them in there (there isn't much space to hammer in those plugs) Is it safe to hammer them in there, Can the intake manifold take that kind of force? Those ports are located on the intake manifold right?

I know that I know nothing. lol

Re: egr removal so #%$ frustrated >:( w/ pic

You can use a closed end wrench

Or an extension and a 1/4 drive socket wrench with a swivel and shallow socket

It's really not bad at all to do
