DOHC Vtec sticker and Paint issue

Hey guys, new member here (I just introduced myself in the new member section) anyway, I just picked up my 5 gen last week and the paint is severely pealing due to the trunk lid being repainted about 13 years ago when the car was new. So as a temp fix (Until I can get a complete full GOOD paint job), I was looking into used trunk lids. I found one that seems like a good deal, only question is that when looking at the pictures of it, I can see the outline from where the DOHC Vtec sticker is!

To me it looks like the trunk lid was repainted and someone did not take the time to peal off the sticker (I know doesn't seem right to me), but that just scares me into thinking it was painted by some kids who didnt know what they were doing. I emailed the seller and he says that he felt it and that he could not feel a sticker underneath, so it has to be left over reside from before.

My question is has anyone had this experience before? When taking off the sticker, it actually leaves the DOHC VTEC residue imprinted in the paint? I mean I don't think the guy is lying, but it just seems strange.

Oh and the Car IS in FLORIDA, so I could see it being sun related. Any HELP much appreciated!!! Here are the pics.

.

Asked him about the spoiler, says it was spray painted flat black by the previous owner, but that he would throw it in with the trunk lid, $130 shipped for everything.

And just this last one is to show my trunk lids condition. Thanks for any help!

Re: DOHC Vtec sticker and Paint issue

The black honda paint of that vintage as well as green seems to let the clear coat peel if it is left in the sun much. Just like the red on 92-96 ludes. And yhea i have removed stickers that left the marks on the trunk lid just like the dohc vtec did on yours. Try some adhesive remover to help remove some of it but there will probably be left still from the sun discoloration vs where it was hid by the sticker.

I have the Pearl White color 5th Gen, and right down the center, hood, roof, trunk....it's been repainted with a gold toned pearl, whereas the rest is the OE silver toned pearl. The DOHC VTEC remnants are visible under the paint as well. I feel you. these careless imperfections irritate me. Lame.

You could look for a carbon fiber trunk lit. A bit more pricey, but worth it I think rather than looking for another lid and painting things again. There's a CF lid and spoiler for sale in El Paso for $600..Just look around, I bet you can find a deal.

Re: DOHC Vtec sticker and Paint issue

Hard to tell... it almost looks like they painted over, if it was peeled off - it shouldn't have the imprint of the letters.

You can pick up a cf trunk for 600 or less - or vinyl wrap your current trunk. Change it up a bit.

If you were to purchase a trunk from Florida and ship it up then you'd be spending more than you should anyway. I'm sure you can get one cheaper locally or do something unique with your current one.

Re: DOHC Vtec sticker and Paint issue

Thanks for the replies! Much appreciated, so I guess I'll just hold off for now then. I think going the carbon fiber route sounds like a good suggestion! its just gonna take a little bit more money, but it should be worth it in the end. In the mean time my trunk has had no problems other than just being an "eye sore" of sorts, but I can live with that for now!

Any recommendations on companies for CF trunks, other than VIS?

Or does anyone know of companies to stay away from?

Re: DOHC Vtec sticker and Paint issue

To be honest, the only way that the "imprint" would be there (From my experience in paint in body) would be if the sticker was left on and painted over, or if the sticker was removed, but the glue was left. In either case, it might not be a good idea to purchase it.

Re: DOHC Vtec sticker and Paint issue

VIS usually have a keyhole indentation to cut out

SEIBON are typically "shaved"

When you go to purchase one - be sure to confirm if the trunk has the keyhole indentation if you plan to drill it out for use. Or not - both companies used to carry both types if I remember correctly, but when I ordered mine they sent one with the option for cutout (which i didn't want) I went by a picture vs asking. My mistake for everyone else to learn from i guess lol

Also, if going the cf route - consider getting your tensioners removed by a dealership. They are too strong for a cf trunk, you risk cracking it with the force of it swinging open. Instead install trunk dampers - there's a writeup on here on how to do it.

Oh man. I saw a charger recently with a flat black wrap. I almost fell in love.
But from what I understand, they're expensive and a little hard to maintain. Is that true?
