Possible ignition switch problem

Hey everybody. I have a 99 Prelude and would like to get your opinion on something that is wrong with my car. At first when I would crank the car I had to hold key forward to keep the car running. As soon as I would release the key, the car would kill out. When it started doing this I would sometimes drive it and it would kill out on me. Now the car won't crank at all. I did a little research and saw that there are alot of problems like this. Isn't there a recall on the ignition safety switch for these cars?

Any opinions on what you think the problem is would be helpful.

Thanks,
MikeB

Yeah there definitely was a recall done on the ignition switch. Call your local Honda dealership to find out if it was done, but that does sound like your problem.

Re: Possible ignition switch problem

Hey dude,

I've got a 1998 SI that had the same problem.

Sometimes it wouldn't start (as in you turn the key and NOTHING on the dash), sometimes it would cut out whilst driving with no warning at all, and the key itself would be warm when you've been driving for a while.

YES they did a recall on the ignition switches, however in NZ and in some other countries they don't allow the recall. In the end I purchased a second hand ignition switch (not the entire key unit and housing and ****, just the electrics behind the key barrel). Costs about thirty bucks NZ.

Simple repair and the difference, wow.

THAT'S your problem brother.

As far as i know aside from the recall, there is a service bulletin and manuals on replacing an ignition switch. if it's new they you can claim the warranty while it's not yet expired. However, it you've got no choice then the local mechanic would be a helping hand on your side.
