Lost Key

Problem....Lost only key to a 2001 Prelude. The dealership tells me the Immobilizer will have to be replaced and with the new key and labor the total will be about $500. Is there any way to bypass the Immobilizer box If I have a locksmith cut a new key OR I buy a cloned key from the dealership?? Thanks for any insight.

Re: Lost Key

The dealership is feeding you BS

They can cut the key based on the vin number of your car. And program it with a special tool used specifically for the immobilizer unit that only certain Honda dealerships carry. Search around on this topic on preludepower and here, you'll find everything you need.

As for the immobilizer bypass.... i'd imagine if it were as simple as swapping around a few wires to bypass it - our cars would be stolen quite often. Since this is not the case, i feel it's safe to assume it cannot be bypassed.

For anyone that may argue that, the exception;
(unless you have a factory key as well as a bypass chip installed into the ecu and can drive around with a CEL forever - this process will not allow you to pull any cel's from your ecu...ever) or go obd1- which doesn't help since you have no key to begin with.

Re: Lost Key

The only issue on that is, on preludes you have to have the red key(certain year models, or 1 factory key that starts the car to program the new key with) Then it is $70 roughly for a new key(thats what we charge to order a key that is cut and then program it.

Without the red key or a factory key on certain years(The 2001 Acura 3.5RL is like this as well) It is about 500.00 because you do have to buy a new key set up including the immobilizer sensor. With the new key set up you get 2 master keys, red (programming) key and the immobilizer unit, maybe 1 valet key too, been to long so i dont remember. Much more of a PITA than getting the key when you still have 1 left. I know it doesnt help at all to tell you that but that is the truth. As far as a bypass chip I have never done one myself so I dont know if that does work. But from the factory I know it is not designed to work without the immobilizer or the key.

Oh and the programmer tool runs about $3000-$4000 which is why that do charge you to program the keys.

Re: Lost Key

If you go to the dealership and get a key cut to your vin - and can show proof of ownership of the car (title/registration/id etc) they will give you the hand brake code. You can then use the new cut key and hand brake code to drive the car to a dealer or your mechanic vs having it towed and paying that extra cost. This code can be used to start the car however many times you need to. (but needs to be done prior to starting the car each time, real pita)

The chip does work. But you loose the ability to pull CEL's through the obd2 plug in. I believe it will also give a constant CEL in the dash. So you would fail any obd2 testing for emissions.

....and you can get T5 keys for $30 vs $70....

there are tons of threads on this out there.

Take the chance and get a T5 key made and try to start the car - who knows, if it's worked for two other people then you might get lucky.
