infamous 5th gear/ Reverse Lock

1998 Base

Well recently a few days ago my slave cyl was dripping and i lost clutch pressure, had it bled an replaced, now i brought it back home an went to shift into reverse, and nothing, as if something blocking it from dropping in gear, no grinds but just won't go in, then i realized while driving, 5th gears a little hard to get into and out, kinda pops back out unless i shift it in just right an hold it in for a second or two.

Now ive read a bunch about the 5th gear grind problem, an that 5th an Reverse share the same synchro cause reverse doesn't have one, all my other gears are fine, ive changed tranny fluid (though not honda trans fluid) ive tried revving an slipping it in, even when my cars off, nothing, won't move into reverse.

Just before i had my slave replaced it was fine, my friend that works at the shop thinks my trannys just shot from running on boost, which i wouldn't doubt, but i don't want to go for worse case scenario until ive tried everything.

Im still thinking about synchromesh, an if that doesn't work i was thinking a bent fork as they say thats common in these scenarios, my friend claims i should just go for a tranny rebuild or buy a new one, opinions please &thank you !

I'm going to be no use at all and say it could be any one of those things - they're all relatively common. Try the easy stuff first - synchromesh, check the fork, linkages etc.

Well reverse on this car doesn't have a synchro. The same thing happened to me and I drove it for two weeks and it eventually fixed itself. In my case it started when a friend who drove the car missed a shift into third and ground it really hard. No explanation for why it corrected itself but I know this has happened to others as well. It fixed itself after I did three good runs at the track about two weeks later.. I went to pull into a parking space and all of a sudden I had reverse back, it just popped back into place. No issues at all since.

well u got lucky. once i lost 5th, reverse was soon gone with it then it left me sittin a couple weeks later.

do the synchromesh. hope that works. dont know if u want to flush(under pressure) the fluid or not. but since ur on boost other trannys are more affordable with benifits than a rebuild. good luck

Re: infamous 5th gear/ Reverse Lock

thanks for the responses guys

@pcggattnc - thanks if thats the result i may aswell just get a new tranny, hopefully its not as bad as your situation.

@okfirearms - I was thinking the same since ive seen multiple people say that it can usually just come back, the funny part is... my friend said he was "test driving" an it got stuck in 5th.. so im guessing it got banged up in that timeframe possibly from him, anyways lesson learned

@Brash - Yea thanks man i haven't had to chance the last day but hopefully today ill try it out an let you guys know

Re: infamous 5th gear/ Reverse Lock

Yeah reverse doesn't use a Synchro.. since you were saying that sometimes it pops out of 5th though and then you can't shift into reverse, it could be a problem with the shift detent or shift interlock mechanisms. look into them if you don't have any success with what has already been mentioned.
