H22 knocking

I hate to start a new post for something that has been gone over a million times, but after searching I have not found my answer.

I have a 97 prelude, stock H22, 118k miles. There is a knocking sound that is coming from the head. Every thread I have found says spun rod bearing, needs valve adjustment, and every other possible culprit, but none of them conclude with what the answer was that fixed the problem.

The engine has a new timing belt and water pump, and I know that the timing marks are all spot on. I tested the LMAs by compresssing each rocker, and they sprung up without sticking at all, so I think I can rule that out. What I really want to know, is for any of you that have seen this problem, what fixed it? I don't need speculations, I need to know what actually fixed it.

Thanks.

Re: H22 knocking

KNOCKING or TAPPING???

I'd take a lonnggggg screwdriver, put one end to your ear, and touch the other end of the screwdriver to various parts around the motor to see if you can pinpoint EXACTLY where it's coming from. Head, block, tranny, etc.....

Re: H22 knocking

^^Ya I did that earlier today at work. I stethoscoped the head, block, oil pan, etc. Its definitely coming from the bottom end. I gonna drain the oil to see if there is any metal shavings from a spun rod bearing or something. And maybe even pull a rod cap to check the bearings.

Re: H22 knocking

lol ya maybe. Its my brothers car and he really could care less about performance unfortunately. One thing I forgot to add in the OP. When I did the water pump this past weekend, I noticed that the front balancer shaft (oil pump I think) was off by about 2-3ish teeth. I fixed it and now everything is lined up fine. Could that have done damage? The guy he bought if from a year ago did the belt right before he sold it, so its his fault lol. Also the cam lobes had a little bit of wear on them. Heres a few cell phone pics, not the best quality, sorry. But to my knowledge, cams should never have wear on them, especially at 118k miles.

Re: H22 knocking

i've had a bad dampener spring on a clutch disc sound like rod knock before on my h22a. Easiest thing in my opinion, drain the oil, if you find some metal shavings, keep tearing apart to get to the oil pick-up tube and see how bad the shavings are on the screen. Then proceed to check the rod bearings.

You said u have it isolated to the bottom end...

Hopefully its fixable. Good luck

****The problem with trying to find an answer to a noise related concern, especially over the internet, is that any number of things can cause a certain"type" of sound. Also, ppl describe sounds differently, or totally wrong... And most of the time, when ppl fix their issue, they usually won't update their thread or whatever.

Well I am assuming its isolated to the bottom end since its a TON louder when I stethoscoped the oil pan/block rather than the head/valve cover.

This has been my exact problem. Every thread I find says the same thing and no disclosure by the OP. I will definitely update this when I find an answer so that any random searcher will know one possible outcome. But it is definitely a knock, not a tick. I know the difference. I got a second opinion from one of the more experienced guys at work today and he says it could be a wrist pin or thrust bearing putting strain on the drivetrain. Either way, I think the bottom end has to come apart after I check a few things like oil/rod bearings. I will keep this updated.

Re: H22 knocking

Ok so I have not forgotten this thread lol. In the past few weeks I replaced the water pump and crank pulley. Both were original and needed replaced. The previous owner didn't replace the water pump when the timing belts were done, and the crank pulley was pretty wobbly.

I drained the oil today to check for shavings, it looked pretty clean so I did not look any further into it. I did an oil change with MMO and decided to just keep an eye on it for a while.
