cv axle DIY?

I have searched this place high and low for a 5th gen cv axle diy. The only one I can find is for a 2nd gen and I can only assume that there are some differences between the two. Anyone willing to do a write up on this to save me some frustration and knuckles when I do it?

Re: cv axle DIY?

its pretty straight forward. Just google prelude axle replacement. Im sure you'll get a few good threads. There might be a few differences, but if you're doing it yourself, you should have the common sense to improvise.

its not to bad of a job. you just have to take apart a lot of stuff. i just had my steering knuckles off my car today cause i was replacing the lower ball joints. but, i'm not sure how much you will really need to take apart since you are just doing the axle. you might be able to get away with just unbolting the tie rod end and unscrewing the axle nut and taping out the lower ball joint. the upper ball joint is more flexible so you should be able to bend the knuckle out of the way enough to remove the axle from the hub without unbolting the upper ball joint as well. once you have it out of the knuckle though you just pull it out of the differential case and replace with the new axle. you should have new axle nuts to replace the old ones though and remember to tap the edge of the axle nut into the little dimple on the end of the axle. Also, since i just did it today, torque spec for the axle nut is 181 ft. lbs. axle nut torque spec is important cause if its too loose or too tight it could grenade the bearing in a short amount of time. i can't remember what the torque specs are for the other stuff. this job will also be much easier if you have access to an air gun.
anyways, shoot any questions at me if you have some. hope this helps a bit.

Re: cv axle DIY?

this is something I'm dreading when it goes. The job is easy on macpherson but a bit more to it with double wishbone so just try find a car with double wishbone diy, probs easier finding another honda guide.

If mine go whilst I have my car I will do a diy, can't believe there isn't one.
