Just got my 99 prelude

Had two 3rd gens in the past, always love the body style on these and wanted that H22.

Finally picked up one for $3k, 98k miles. Here's the problem though.

It's an auto, and sometimes when it's shifting out of 1st, 2nd most noticeable. It will disengage the gear, essentially putting it at idle, then slips back into gear a few seconds later. It's only this bad when it's cold, once it warms up it shifts quicker.

So is the tranny going out?

Re: Just got my 99 prelude

I'd say yes. The only thing that makes me doubt myself is that 98k is pretty low mileage I'd think to start seeing problems. Mine personally died around 170k, but the previous owner completely babied the car and kept up with all the maintenance when it was required. Perhaps your previous owner was rather rough on the car.

Regardless, I haven't seen a single 5th gen auto. that hasn't had transmission issues. It's pretty much a solid guarantee that it is going to fail on you at some point. I'd get it to a shop for an actual inspection if you want and to start pricing out your options.

Look into swapping it to a 5speed.

Re: Just got my 99 prelude

That sucks, it was ok on the way to the store, then on the way back it would shift out of gear then i'd hit the gas and the car wouldn't move the RPMs would just go up, then finally it would slowly catch into gear, was really bad this time.

A swap will probably cost as much as I paid for the car, might as well sell it and get a 5speed. Lame, stupid ass auto tranny.

Re: Just got my 99 prelude

Most likely your tranny is failing. You can get it rebuilt but it`s going to fail eventually again... I say you get a 5 speed swap and you`ll be good to go

Not necessarily. You can probably find someone doing a part-out that would sell you everything you need for a good price. Comb Craigslist for totaled Ludes or check on here or all the other Prelude sites.

I personally paid $450 for all my parts out of a local member on here that was totaled. I put a brand new clutch and flywheel in, new master and slave cylinders, and a steel braided clutch line. Altogether that cost me about $300 or so. So around $750 all together for parts with half of that just me being picky and wanting to put as many brand new parts in there as I could.

The only other question on price though is how mechanically minded are you? If you are confident in doing the swap yourself then go for it! I wish I would have on mine but my brother (who's an engineer and former motorcycle mechanic) was out of town for a couple months and I couldn't wait for him to get back. I found a local performance shop though that did all the work for $700.

So $1,400 all together I paid. Rebuilding the auto would have cost just the same and would have eventually failed on me again.

Re: Just got my 99 prelude

Don't feel bad for paying $3k, it pales in comparison to what I paid for my '01 SH with 76,000 miles. Do the swap it will be worth it. Still a good ROI.

you could try switching out the trans fluid for some new honda fluid and see if that helps any. maybe the po put something different from honda fluid in there and the trans doesn't like it. but yeah the 5th gen autos are a ticking time bomb.

Re: Just got my 99 prelude

well here's the CEL, looks like a 70. http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?feature=mhee

car isn't even driveable anymore, on the way home last time it would randomly downshift on me throwing the RPMS to near redline, then it would go out of gear leaving me coasting, then go back an forth in this cycle. I barely made it home, then check engine came on.

don't have to money or skill to fix this, pretty pissed.

Re: Just got my 99 prelude

did you test drive this car before buying it? Do the 5 speed swap man you will be happy you did, and you dont really have a choice, no one is gonna give you enough money to buy another car for that one in the condition it is now.

Re: Just got my 99 prelude

I did test drive it that's what I don't understand. It shifted and ran fine when I drove it, not even 50 miles later it takes a ****? It doesn't make sense at ALL. Unless they changed the tranny fluid or something JUST before my test drive.

I don't have money for a swap at all, I have like $500. I guess this car is just going to sit for a loooong time, and i'm gonna be riding my motorcycle all summer.

i'm about to change the fluid see if that helps, lost all my tools when I moved though so gonna have to wait til tomorrow when I go buy more.

Re: Just got my 99 prelude

sound like you did not do your homework. Lesson learned. If I were you I'd do exactly what you stated - drive your motorcycle until you save up enough cash for a swap.
