Icon5 realistic whp to expect from the JDM Type-s ?

swapping a JDM h22 type-s from the prelude SH into a civic ek. Have come across very conflicting whp figures. Removed the ATTS module and replacing the m2u4 tranny with an m2a4 (adding the helical lsd from the euro-r h22). Will throw on an intake + custom 4-2-1 header and then a mild tune on my existing p08.

the drivetrain loss's in dyno figures i've seen online are pretty shocking considering the engines factory hp rating is 217?. Most of them are 155-160 whp. Over 50 hp lost? almost 25% loss on an fwD? Stock vs. Stock i'm guessing the type-s loses to a b18c5 easy then?

motor will be installed during the next couple of days. leakdown test with 100 psi from the compressor yielded 98 psi on all 4 cylinders so im guessing not that much wear and tear on the engine.

What is a realistic whp to expect in your opinion?

my location is about 500 m above sea level if thats relevant.

Re: realistic whp to expect from the JDM Type-s ?

stock H22A5 dynoed with CAI and axleback muffler - 196hp
with drivetrain loss 160hp

so realisticly you should get ~170-180

and its always about air too... if its hot and moist day you can easily lose 20hp

Re: realistic whp to expect from the JDM Type-s ?

nice! i just realized something i've been checking figures for the USDM 5th gen type-s's..those are rated 200hp. the JDM one on the other hand is 217. Do the USDM ones come with red tappet covers too?

Transmission loss is dependent on what dyno you are using. TypeT is correct you should see 180whp+ for a stock Type-S. I got 173whp from my stock H22a8.

Really ? No advantage at all over stock header ? Would love vibrant but not available and wayyyy too costly to import here.

And wow at those figures on stock motor.

What exhaust diameter would you guys recommend for the type s ? I don't plan on building it further anytime soon so for just the I/h/e and a mild tune?

Might as well return this header then if of no use

where you live then? ...yep, return that crap, and save for decent one

yep those dc's/megans whatever ebay crap have the same piping diameters than stock. exept they weight less and their 4-2 section is better made. so no much win there.

AND if your type s/sir comes with its original header, its better than stock so its better than those bolt on ones too.

are you gettin sir or type s engine? type s have atts so its kinda hard to tune

Re: realistic whp to expect from the JDM Type-s ?

whoa neat video! yeah i'm just gonna return it and yes the engine did come with its original one.

unfortunately its the redtop out of the japanese prelude and not accord so it had that huge atts module i've removed. Was running an NA sohc before this.. made about 137 whp and then decided to go zex wetshot and *cough* mechanic made a blunder and installed a 150 shot nozzle instead of 50.. so that setup went to hell. Anyhow I was planning on retaining my P08 from the sohc to run with this one.

Actually now that I bring it up, is there any point to a tune if the engine is stock and only has an intake and custom 2.5" exhaust? will it do much at all or should I wait a while?

I dont think that you see much difference even if you get better header with tuning

Re: realistic whp to expect from the JDM Type-s ?

ok, a few things. there was never a usdm type s, ever. the dyno numbers you saw were low from what was previously said, and because ATTS absorbs A LOT of power. dont get a 2.5" exhaust. go 3" header back. dynos have shown that an untuned 3" exhaust outperformed a tuned 2.5" exhaust, making more in horsepower and torque. and if youre going to add more engine mods, i wouldnt advise getting it tuned yet, id wait until i had everything

Re: realistic whp to expect from the JDM Type-s ?

my bad, I meant to refer to the prelude SH.

Gotcha. 3" it is. does the .5 extra make it sound alot more? I want this as a daily driver and my nerves tend to get shot by constant droning exhausts. To be honest, i just want 170-175 whp and i'm a happy bunny. But if after the intake and exhaust this motor makes less than that, even if its a tad bit below 170 I know my OCD will kick in and i'd probably invest in cams so I guess i'll wait for the tune as you suggested.

Also as I'm going with my existing p08 .. would anyone know where I could download the type-s (or cl1 euro-r) basemap from? And if the ecu gives me a CEL due to the absence of the ATTS will my tuner be able to disable that with obd1 ?

thanks a bunch !

P.S: Do you reckon this motor with intake/exhaust to give a cl7 euro-r (k20a) competition? the power ratings for the the k20a is about the same but I guess they'd be better at putting that power to the ground (saw a few stock ones dyno at 180-185 whp). I'm being taunted by my friend whos got a stock euro-r as to why I didnt go for the k series and will be testing with him first thing when the cars on road. Then again the cl7 should be at least a couple of hundred pounds heavier if not more than an ek9.

its loud
dont know then how much it effects to low end and engines revving (those could go worse?)
of course it gives more power in dyno where rpms are high but no one ever talks hows it with lower speeds and dd..

k20 has much much better gear rations, and otherwise its better engine as well
and preludes are heavy cars also

Re: realistic whp to expect from the JDM Type-s ?

I think type t covered most of your questions, k20 depending on the application it's in would rip an h22 apart. not to say there aren't some builds that would give it a run for it's money, but an h22 is more than enough for most people trust me.

Also, if you are worried about noise, simply go with a 3" exhaust and get an 18" resonator and a twin loop muffler. It'll sound more race than rice. It'll keep cop attention off you as well.

U got a normal h22 from a prelude sh. 200hp at the flywheel. U didnt get a type s motor. Usdm preludes never came with type s motors unless it was swapped.

Red tappet cover, m2u4 transmission with atts module and a separate device like an ecu to connect with and the engine label thingy reads H22A..came from Japan so from the JDM prelude not the USDM hence the title of the thread :)

as for the k20, I remember about a couple of years back this guy installed the same motor as mine in a 95 ex sedan. Another friend of mine had a cl7 euro-r that felt fast as !@#% .. he took the seats out , had a piggy back, something called "OBIT", intake and aftermarket exhaust. The stock type-s in the red 95 still managed to stay by its rear door.

we had a twin turbo 350z chase them in the first race but cant find that video.

Last edited by sir_lagalot; 03-21-2012 at 02:28 AM. Reason: I typed the engine model incorrectly- its an H22A not A4..

I know. the traffic police has gotten much better here now so its good but up till a year or so back it was absolute madness. Everyone raced the streets with 700 whp supras and r32's and evos and what not.. seen plenty of cop chases but they could never keep up in their 1.5 litre toyota sedans.

its better now.. but at a very high cost.. a supra during an arranged event slid off into the crowd watching along the sidelines and killed 5 people *sigh*. Thats when they cracked down harder than ever.

Re: realistic whp to expect from the JDM Type-s ?

anyone know where I can find a basemap for the JDM H22A Redtop?
so basically the basemap for the Japanese 5th gen Prelude Type-S/SiR S-Spec (BB6) or Japanese 6th gen Accord/Torneo Euro-R (CL1).
