Crankshaft Pulley is not spinning/belts shredded

Hi everyone. Im new to this forum but I've owned my 97 Prelude for about 6 years now. It's a 5-speed base model with 206,000 miles.

As I was driving to work today I heard a loud bang like something hit the bottom of my car. I immediately lost power steering and my battery light came on. I figured I just lost a belt because the car was still running fine. I get to work, pop the hood and see both my belts are shredded and my crank pulley isn't spinning. The pulley seems loose and wobbly.

Is it safe to drive my car back home at the end of my work day? I don't mind the no power steering but I just don't want to damage my engine. I'm no stranger to working on this car so as long as I just lost the bolt that holds the crank on I should be able to fix this myself.

Thanks for any input you guys have.

Jake

Re: Crankshaft Pulley is not spinning/belts shredded

Running without the PS belt is no problem, you just OBVIOUSLY won't have PS.

But running without the alternator, you'll only be running off your battery, so you should try to use as little electrical power as possible. I lost my PS/alt belt in the scooby as well and had to drive ~5 miles to the autoparts store for a new belt, and luckily the battery lasted that long.

How far is your drive home?

Re: Crankshaft Pulley is not spinning/belts shredded

Be careful your crank pulley doesn't fall all the way off. It's a common issue for them to come loose. I honestly wouldn't run it until you have that tightened.

As far as the battery life goes - you'll be lucky to make it far without the alternator.

Re: Crankshaft Pulley is not spinning/belts shredded

How is the crank pulley "not spinning" the cause of the belt popping. If the crank pulley stopped spinning, the belts would just stop. After all the crank is whats driving the belts. Not the other way around.

Re: Crankshaft Pulley is not spinning/belts shredded

So I took the crank pulley off today. Looks to me like the pulley is shot. It's really worn and looks like it's been wobbling for a while because there's also wear marks on my engine block. Take a look at the pictures and you'll see what I mean.

What's my next step? Do you guys think I need to replace my crankshaft? The place where the little metal key goes is really worn.

Thanks

your harmonic balancer was bad on the crank pulley and never noticed it.....it finally took a **** on you...but it def. looks like that crank is done for....and the crank pulley isn't suppose to be easy to spin like the other ones

Re: Crankshaft Pulley is not spinning/belts shredded

i had the same problem but didnt have to replace the motor i had a guy come and put a new thread inside the end of the crank i cant remember what the procedure was called but its a little brass fitting inside the end of my crank, along with a new key and new crank pulley and new bolt. the piece makes everything bolt in snug and no more loose crank pully

Re: Crankshaft Pulley is not spinning/belts shredded

I'll definitely have to look into Helicoil. Thanks.

Has anyone had luck getting a broken key out of the crankshaft? I'm starting to think If I can get that out, I could buy a new key along with a pulley and just hope there's enough edge left on the crankshaft notch for the key to bite onto.

It looks like there are teeth on the pulley but not on the crankshaft. Is that correct?

Well I've decided just to sell her. I started her up the other day to move her to a different part of the driveway and now she just cranks and doesn't start. Bummer. If you live in Michigan or know anyone who does and is looking for a Prelude to work on here is the sale ad:

Thanks to all for your input and help on this over the past few weeks.

Re: Crankshaft Pulley is not spinning/belts shredded

I wonder how much a company would charge to ship it down here to Dayton? I'm interested, storage is my issue. Honestly, You should be able to slap a new key in there (making sure the timing and balance shaft belt gears are lined up) and go with it for a little while, until you can get a new crank and get the bottom end re-built. I've got a few spare keys, I can send you one for nothing.

Edit: I've got some spare keys because my balancer fell off too, I was just lucky it didn't mar the crank at all. I got a new balancer and key from the local stealership ($150!!!) and went ahead and ordered a few more keys, just in case. The previous owner swears up and down he torqued AND Loctited it when he replaced the timing belt, but I've got one junk balancer to prove him wrong (I can post pics of it if you would like, yours is mint compared to mine.)

Thanks for the offer man. That's awesome but I think my timing jumped when the pulley came off. The engine just cranks now with no starting. I've decided I'm just gonna sell it. I have an RX8 that will have to become my daily driver until I find another car. Definitely before the winter hits.

You're only about 230 miles away! Rent a dolly and come pick it up! haha

I'll give you $100 off. That'll pay for the dolly and some gas.

The timing probably didn't jump, but if the key broke in the right place, the balance belt pulley may have spun separately from the timing pulley and thrown the crank position sensor off some. The balancer only dampens engine harmonics (to save bearing surfaces and stop any chattering that may occur from friction) but it also drives the accessories. When mine fell off, I could still drive it, but only for very short distances (aka from the road to my driveway, LOL). Honestly, if it doesn't start, that isn't too big of a project. It needs a new crank regardless so it'll probably just get another engine if someone buys it. I'd be the only guy in Ohio with two Nighthawk Black Pearl BB6s.
