98 trans slip? shudder to 3rd? help

1998 w/125K
shifts to 2nd but for a brief second feels like its not connecting. NOT slipping but like the trans is dissconecting from the engine (like you put the clutch pedal in on a manual) so the revs go up a bit THEN it goes into 2nd. Jerky would be a description, you're acclerating (normal, not hammering it) and then you're not, then whoosh you're in 2nd and accelerating again. Weird. Is this the way these things work? Also after driving a while so everything is heated up I get a bit of shudder going into 3rd, like the clutches are chattering but not the smoothe slip of a dying trans. Is this problem fixable or do I have just a few miles before failure?

thanks,
Marshall

Its hard to tell just from your diagnosis but if its rougher going into certain gears then it could be a bad sign, I went to look at a few auto preludes recently with a mate and one was clicking in the cabin as we were driving along and it was noticeable! gears weren't smooth either and another shifted smooth but made a few noises on idle in the transmission.

I think transmission problems on preludes are common but sometimes they last a while until they completely break other times not, many people on here have driven with the problem and their car is still working.

The automatic transmissions in the 5th gens were terrible for some reason. Its not a matter of if they will go bad, but when. I'm in the middle of a 5 speed conversion because of the bad auto trans actually.

You should be okay for a little bit. But start saving money for either a trans replacement or the 5 speed conversion.

Thanks for the replies but those are pretty general observations. Not quite what I was looking for. What component in the trans could be causing this? and how easy or costly is it to fix? The car belongs to my fiance'. We got an auto for her. These are great transpo cars! Little less then 200hp and just under 30mpg. Thats tough to beat unless you buy a brand new car. They aren't sports cars though, just a sporty economy car. The hastle and cost of a 5 spd conversion would seem a little overboard on a front wheel drive economy car.
If somene has some ideas and / or experience with this trans and how to fix the problem please let me know. I just need to keep this car in good running order and get a lot of use from it. Thanks so much.

Please search, this question has been covered a few times and even as a general guide in the 5th gen forum as a sticky...

5th Gen Auto Transmission Failure Guide

Face it as everyone will tell you the same info you don't want to hear. Look for a rebuilt transmission or convert to a 5speed. Hondas during late 90s and early 00s had many faulty automatic transmissions in the Prelude & Accord.
