Worse than terrible gas mileage

Hey guys, I love everything about my new prelude except for the fact that it gets 250 KILOMETRES per tank. Yes, its a Canadian car in a cold winter with lots of warming up, but it should be getting close to 500 k per tank. The dealer thinks it could be the firing wires, what do you guys think?

Have you recently replaced the spark plugs? IF you haven't, you may want to change them out, get only NGK spark plugs.

Re: Worse than terrible gas mileage

holy crap man... i get about 600 k per tank depending on how i drive.. with that bad of fuel economy though it could be a few things. injectors, there could be a bad sensor or two thats making the engine run really rich. do you notice any driveability problems? cause you could be getting some blow by in the cylinders. fuel pressure regulator - maybe there is something wrong with the return system. thats horrible mileage though..

when you are changing the plugs if there is a lot of carbon build up on them thats a good indicator that the engine is running too rich

Re: Worse than terrible gas mileage

Hey man, I will start with the spark plugs. Then during dark while ur car is running spray your wires with water using a window cleaner bottle or something similar. At night you will see electric sparks around the wire if your wires are not good anymore. Get a bottle of injector cleaners from Princess Auto for like $2.99 i think they are on sale this week. That should clean out your injectors. LASTLY if your gas mileage is still ****ty. I suggest you take off the throttle body and clean the gunk out of it. Its held down by 6 bolts if I am not wrong. This should make your butterfly intake valve clean so it might not always be wide open = more efficient with gas. Hope it helps.

do a full tune up (plugs, wires. fuel filter, air filter,) clean the tb off aswell ... after that do a compreession test if your fuel consumption does not go down

Re: Worse than terrible gas mileage

Mine has gone down significantly since premium went over $4.50... It's a conspiracy. It shouldn't cost me $62.00 to fill up a ****ing Honda.

Re: Worse than terrible gas mileage

Yeah the spark plugs are basically brand new, and I pulled all of them and they're fine. I think it could be the 02 sensor, I feel like you guys are right when you say its running rich. It was misfiring on 2 cylinders because of a distributor cap was completely clogged, got all that cleaned and I got 300k on my last tank. I'm going to check the 02 sensor because its got a aem v2 intake, who knows who installed it and if they changed anything.

Re: Worse than terrible gas mileage

In Holland petrol cost 1.87 euro per liter.
1 gallon = 3,785 liter
1 gallon = 7.08 euro
7.08 euro = 9.44 dollar
So what are you complaining about?
