Tranny Going Bad?

Ive got a '97 Prelude euro spec with the F20a4 and 5 spd manual. A few times when I try to go into 2nd or 3rd gear its rough and the shifter wont go in right away. I was at a stop and had it in neutral and had to mess around with it before it would even go into any gear. Doesnt do it everytime though. Any ideas?

How many miles on it? Easiest thing to check would be your shift cables. When your car is off, can you shift through all the gears? Next thing I would check is your transmission fluid level. Make sure its at the bottom on the fill hole when on level ground. The fifth gen 5spd is a pretty reliable transmission.

Re: Tranny Going Bad?

about 130k miles. with the car off it goes thru each gear smoothly. is there a dipstick for this tranny? Is it the same tranny as the H22s?

Re: Tranny Going Bad?

No dipstick unless it is the manual, if u look behind the right front tire on the transmission there are two bolts, the lower one fits the square part of a 3/8 ratchet and that's your drain bolt. The upper bolt is the fill hole. This is where you should fill the fluid until it runs out of this hole.

Re: Tranny Going Bad?

I meant no dipstick unless it is the auto, the manual doesn't have one.

fixed

(and you already fixed the auto/dipstick issue )

just keep filling it until it runs out of the fill hole.

Mine does the same thing, it usually has trouble with first or reverse. If it acts up, just pump the clutch once and be a little slower on the shift and your golden.

Mine must not be stock bolt then cause it was definately a 3/8 rachet I used.

Re: Tranny Going Bad?

Cars still doing this randomly thru out the day. Is it going thru the gears smoothly while the engines off a sign of a hydraulic component going bad?

Re: Tranny Going Bad?

No, that's just checking your linkage. Did you ever check your transmission fluid? That's what it sounds like man. If its going through the gears with car off it ain't the linkage, and if some gears shift fine then your clutch is operating normally.

Re: Tranny Going Bad?

I'm having similar problems with my tranny too. Mine is first gear, sometimes it goes in smoothly but sometimes it's hard. I was approaching a red light and it turned green before I could fully stop I tried to put it in 1st gear and it wouldn't go in at all. It also grinds a little from 1st to 2nd.
