Engine revving in park

When my 98 sits in park for a few minutes it starts to rev up then drop then up and drop again over and over until I put it in drive or reverse (its an auto). I found this video of an accord doing the same exact thing: Not sure if related but it also starts to run hot if it sits too long (coolant level is fine, only does this if idle for awhile). No CEL popping up.

I'm a car newbie here. What could this be? Vacuum leak possibly?

Re: Engine revving in park

i had this problem on my civic last year and i thought it was a vacuum leak in the intake manifold somehwere. but one day in the shop i just took the air intake and box off and cleaned up the throttle plate and inside the throttle body a bit with some carb and throttle body cleaner and that cleared it right up. i suppose maybe there was some sediment trapped between the plate and the throttle body wall or something. anyways i would do that for sure first and if it keeps doing it then you might have to take it somewhere to get a vacuum leak test.

Re: Engine revving in park

Mine did that... fixed it by make sure all vacuum hoses were connected.

Had that problem a few months ago, just take out the throttle body and clean it out real good and make sure the butterfly valve is set right.
