One thing after another.

I went outside and started my Lude this morning to warm her up. I was going to take advantage of this unusually warm Feb day and go for a nice long cruise. I ran back inside to pour my coffee, and when I came back out I noticed a huge puddle of oil! I looked underneath and I saw oil PISSING out! It was leaking from the middle in the back of the motor onto the flex pipe.
Guess I'm not going anywhere, I thought to myself. I jacked it up and started it quick to see exactly where the oil was coming from. As I suspected, oil was pouring out of the oil cooler housing- or oil filter housing. There is an o-ring that seals the housing to the block. I have seen these go bad on Hondas before. I took it of and it was old and brittle and cracks very easily. I called the local parts stores and they all said the same thing...I's not available to them, they show a listing, but they can't get it. Gonna have to go to the dealer on Monday.

Good thing I started it up first and noticed it leaking when I came out! Otherwise I would have been screwed. The way it was leaking would of probably been like a quart every 1/2 mile. Five miles down the road my motor would be toast! Right after I just had the head off of it and had head gasket and complete valve job done.
It's just one thing after another with this car. I can't catch a break! I guess it should be expected with a car with over 220k on it. The oil cooler housing o-ring was still the original one from when the car was new 14 years ago.

I'd rather ride my skateboard to work than drive a Kia!

Re: One thing after another.

My preludes is leaking oil too. Not that much like you but it leaves small oil spots and smells like burnt oil sometimes under my Hood. It seems to be coming from the left side of the oil filter (laying under the car point of view) what could it be??

sounds about the location of your oil cooler. jack up the car and start it and take a look under there and see where it's coming from. if that's what it is, be careful. it's leaking slow now. before you know it, you could run into my problem.. mine was leaking about a quart every gas fill up... till one day i was driving to work. when i got there, i happened to walk behind my car and noticed a stream of oil running out from under my car and down the street in the direction i came from. lost about 3 qts of oil in 10 miles.

Re: One thing after another.

Alright cool thanks! Will do that soon. But I don't go through oil that quick? I've had to top it off once since I've done an oil change. If that is the problem how will I exactly know? Also what would I need to replace? Where to buy and cost and difficulty of fixing.

Re: One thing after another.

Mine did this same thing last weekend! I'm so grateful it was such a simple fix. My mechanic said he was grateful I noticed the leak and knew better than to drive it that way. Lol!

Re: One thing after another.

Mine leaked oil bad when i got it. I changed the cam seal, the oil cooler o-ring, the dizzy inner and outer seal, the oil pan gasket and the valve cover gasket. Now she doesnt leak a drop. So much for carfax saying the motor was rebuilt 30k before I got it.

Re: One thing after another.

So I went to Honda today and bought the oil cooler O-ring. They freakin charged my $10 for one rubber o-ring. Oh well, whatever. (majestic Honda has them online for like $2.50, but they want like $14 shipping and handling) You cant win either way! When I got home I crawled under there, cleaned everything all nice. Popped the new o-ring on, tightened everything back up, put on a new oil filter, drained the oil and put in some fresh stuff. I started her up and let it run for a while; looking for any leaks underneath. There is none, my leak has stopped! The old o-ring was shot! It was all brittle and starting to crack everywhere.
