Just bought a 5th gen and already a problem

Bought an 01 with 74K on it and one owner. It was owned by a girl and she didnt race it; she was preggo and needed a bigger car. I got a PP inspection from the local honda dealership and evrything checked out, so I bought it. On the way home I noticed that it was really hard to shift and change gear, and one time I put the clutch all the way in (to the floor), tried to down shift to 2nd, and there was a scraping noise like the clutch was grinding????? The fluids are all full, and the clutch is fine, so I'm not sure what the problem is??? Any advice?

I'm not really familiar with transmissions issues, but maybe I'm going to guess maybe the clutch is going out or maybe internal damage to the transmission?

Re: Just bought a 5th gen and already a problem

check clutch fluid. from my understanding, when a clutch is wore out it will slip, as opposed to what you are describing. as far as the sound, have you ever drove a manual before? sounds to me like you are grinding gears. Also i think i've heard this problem being caused by the throwout bearing maybe, dont quote me on that. some one with more knowledge will chime in eventually.

Re: Just bought a 5th gen and already a problem

My car started to have the same symptoms around 70k miles. Replaced the clutch/flywheel, haven't had a problem since. (now at 99k)

If I'm not mistaken aren't you supposed to fully engage the clutch every time you shift?

Re: Just bought a 5th gen and already a problem

My dd is stick so it's not a lack of skill. It might be the throw-out bearing. I checked the clutch fluid and It was fine, and the clutch isnt slipping so idk what the problem is...

Sounds like a throw out bearing, my 4th gen did that when my throw out bearing melted into 4 pieces.

Re: Just bought a 5th gen and already a problem

most girls hardly change there oil like they are suppose too or do any regular maintence untill the car breaks...lol
id rather have a guys car .....

but regardless it does sound like a clutch issue...you say the "clutch is fine", how do u know this? when was it last changed?

when i first got my Lude the guy told me the "clutch was fine" and two weeks later i was pulling the tranny...

and my clutch never slipped either..just wouldnt go into 3rd gear sometimes, sometimes wouldnt go to second...

when i took it apart , all the clutch springs were broken and inside the tranny housing and the clutch was literally falling apart ...

and this was a 50k mile motor ...

something is not right, and the only way to know exactly is to take it apart .

Re: Just bought a 5th gen and already a problem

^^ yup agree. I'm the 3rd owner of my '01 SH when I bought it at 75k on the ODO. The 2nd owner had already replaced the clutch around 58k on the ODO.

It all depends on who drove it prior. Bear in mind that a lot of people probably ride their clutch too...

She had service records for the oil changes. But anyways thanks for the input I'll check the clutch/flywheel this weekend and go from there...

Re: Just bought a 5th gen and already a problem

kind of need more info on your problem.. are you able to rev up your engine with no problems when you have the clutch pedal all the way down? if not then your clutch disc might be slipping and your pressure plate might be worn out or you might have a bad release bearing. if so, then your problem is more likely internal where your synchronizer assemblies are wearing out. but with only 74k on the car that shouldn't really be a problem yet. unless this girl didn't know how to shift well... is the shift engagement rough/grindy/tough going into all gears or just one or two? if its all then thats an indicator its your clutch assembly but if its just one or two gears and the same ones everytime then the problem is likely internal.
