Possible damage i could of caused my engine and tranny

hey fellow luders i got a situation that occured, i drove my car with less than a quarter tank i tried to make it home on E with the gas light on. I made it all the way up until three exits before my house and the car ran out of gas on the freeway in the fast lane. My car violently stop then loss all power, i waited a minute re cranked the ignition then tried to make it to the next exit it ran for a minute then lost all power nothing worked. I eventually called road side assistence and got a jump with two gallons of gas. My question is what kind of internal damage could i have caused if any trying to run my car on empty till it lost power, and because of my car violently stopping while at a high speed what kind of damage could i have caused my transmission i got a SS auto.

Can you give a better description of the "violent" stop? Did your tires lock up and you came to a screeching halt? Or did everything just shutdown and the car slowed down quickly?

Re: Possible damage i could of caused my engine and tranny

Ok first of all DON'T do that again to your car its just plain dump. Yes its bad for the engine because it needs the fuel like you need water and food. the reason it stop like that is because its stalling but you must have know this. as far as the trans it will be fine, but your engine have gotten damaged not so much where you gotta take it to a mechanic but yeah i little damage. But don't worry it won't start knocking or anything crazy but if you continue to do that don't expect that engine to last you long.

Your probally good, next time just get some gas man. Definately not good to repeatedly do that, espicially right after it starves itself from gas.

Having less then 1/4 tank of gas is bad for the fuel pump.

Also, if you've never replaced your fuel line components, if you run the tank down to the wire like that you could be sucking up debris that coulda gotten into the gas tank. Wouldn't normally believe this but after helping my friend replace his fuel pump, there were 2 leaves, and piece of electrical tape, and little gatherings of sand in there. no clue how.

So anyway, you'd have to replace your fuel pump and/or filter if you repeatedly sucked up stuff like that. That's probably WORST-case scenario though, as I can't see stuff getting in there often.

^^ this x2

Besides sucking up that extra junk from the bottom of the tank- you're fine.

I've accidentally hit my fuel cutoff a few times while driving - but my motor still runs strong.

Re: Possible damage i could of caused my engine and tranny

You didn`t do any damage to the motor itself or the tranny. It lessens the life of your fuel pump and you can get debris left at the bottom of the fuel tank into the fuel lines and possibly clogging up your fuel filter quicker.

Re: Possible damage i could of caused my engine and tranny

No damage was done to your motor or tranny, like stated. Worst possible thing is it wears on the fuel pump, which uses the fuel as lube. So no fuel means no.....
