Icon9 Sad Story...

This is my first post on here and sadly it's about my 5th gen tranny plague I've been driving my car (99 Base Auto) for a few months and everything was great when I bought it. Then I had a major oil leak (Rear main seal, crank seal, and valve cover gasket) I got that fixed. Another few months and now my tranny is going on me. Started to slip gears, and then now it won't go into reverse, and when it did, I couldn't drive past second gear. I'd be going 30mph at 4000rpm. I was REALLY low on ATF so I went to carquest and got some Honda ATF put about 2.5qts in hoping that'd just be the trick I needed, but I guess not. The car is at 159,xxx miles should I fix it or just get a new car?

This is a picture of when I first got it.

yes it is. the motor will run forever if you take good care of it, and once you get a 5spd it will do the same.

I'm considering the 5sp swap, but I hate the color red, the only reason I got a red Prelude,is because I love prelude's lol.

Re: Sad Story...

yes, Seibon CF hood, yes, the front emblem matches the rear, and still clean, optima battery, and dry AEM filter now, the one shown collapsed on the way home from the dealership.... so a new dry AEM is what I use now as I tried a oil k&n but I live in the country and the oil turned into cement with all the corn and soy pollen, but all is well now that I found the winning combo lol

Nice, very very nice! The thing is, this year we haven't gotten so much snow in CT I'd love to get another prelude but I don't want to die in the snow lol

Re: Sad Story...

tell you what I wana put a T2T4 transmission into my lude and get rid of my ATTS, if you find a T2T4 transmission and send it to me with your base ECM I'll send you my 5 speed and ATTS, c/v axles, and my SH ECM. You would need an H22A4 block to make it work but hey small price to pay.

My oil filter is somewhere above my oil pan, I think, I'm not sure, I just did an oil change about 3k miles ago too lol But it is an H22A4.

Re: Sad Story...

yeah I done confused you then myself, their is a difference in the blocks even between the H22A4 from the SH to the base, both internally and externally, the easiest way to tell the difference is the oil filter location, the SH block will have the oil filter to the left of the intake (driverside is left) and close to the top of the block ( when I change my filter I go from the top of the engine and never get to my elbow to reach it, it's that easy.) in fact it's higher than my fuel filter lol where the base block is under the intake and a bitch to get to.

Re: Sad Story...

I went through the same thing this past summer at around 170,000 miles. Most quotes I could get from a trans. shops to replace/fix the automatic were around $2,000+. I decided to go with the 5-speed swap (which I had already been researching before the trans. failed anyways).

I found a member on here (and lived about an hour north of me) who was rear-ended by a drunk driver and sold me about 95% of the parts I needed for $400. Since I've never done a project that big, I decided to take it to a custom shop. That shop charged me $800 for the labor and had it done in about 3 days.

So essentially I dropped $1,200 all together for the swap. I have no regrets at all about doing it. Try to find someone who's parting out a wrecked Lude, there's quite a few between all the sites (unfortunately). If you can do the work yourself, that's just that much more money you'll save and can spend on other toys. It's a whole new car afterwards. Just do it, don't sell it.

If you have any questions about the swap, let me know.

Re: Sad Story...

I had a bad crank pulley and bad crank shaft. The AUTo tranny was doing the same thing you just mentioned. I currently have 186K on the chasis and did a motor and 5spd swap. The JDM motor that went in has bout 90K on it. The 5spd is from a 4th Gen. Since then I love my car for the faster pick up then AUTO and the motor compression is way better then the orig one I had!

Keep the Lude and get the 5spd swap! Not-ting wong wif a wed Ple-rude!! LMFAO

Re: Sad Story...

Thanks guys for all the insight, I'm on a few other forums and I've met with some guys and we're talking about the swap, and what it's gonna cost me, in parts and in labor. Another question I have is my lower timing belt pulley is starting to wobble. I'm thinking it was a timing belt hack job done by the previous owner, can I get that fixed?
