Icon9 5th gear is basically gone

I have taken my 99 prelude to four different shops to see if I can get one of them to figure out why the 5th gear was popping out. I got everything from new tranny to replacing the synchros, to clutch, to just changing the flywheel. Any ideas of what could be the problem, now the problem is that it wont even go into 5th anymore. Im afraid it could be the tranny.

Re: 5th gear is basically gone

we can't tell you without taking the trans apart.

how many miles are on your clutch?
how many miles are on your flywheel?
is your trans low on fluid?

x2, very confusing.

Did you get a new trans or did they recommend one? If you got a new trans, it's probably just the shift linkage. If they recommended you one, that's because your 5th gear is jacked up, and you need a new trans.

Re: 5th gear is basically gone

Try simple stuff first. Change the fluid and check the linkages to see if that works.

Then see about pulling it to bits and checking synchros etc.

Yes those were all different recommendations I got from different places. Well I checked trans fluid, checked linkages and everything was fine. I got the car over two years ago and it had about 100k on it, it is now on 145k, I dont drive it a lot. All the shops I did take it to said it was about that time the clutch needed to be replaced. I left it at a shop to get a diagnostics cause they couldnt tell me what was wrong unless they took it apart.

Re: 5th gear is basically gone

if you weren't having problems at all shifting into gears 1-4 then its not your clutch. your clutch just engages and disengages the transmission input shaft. thats it. so if you were having problems shifting into 5th before and now you can't shift into it at all, there is for sure something wrong with either the 5th speed synchronizer assembly or possibly the shift fork, rail... it would have to be pulled apart to see what needs to be replaced. replacing the flywheel wouldn't do anything cause its just one of the driving members of the clutch assembly. its definitely an internal problem in the tranny.
