Oil Spray?!?!

hey guys, need some help and advice here, maybe you guys can help me narrow down the possible problems. so here goes my story....

So this morning i get up to go to work, got in my car and started her up in -16 Celsius weather (3.2 Fahrenheit) sat in my car and twirled my thumbs to music for 5 minutes and started to drive. I've been noticing some burnt oil smell inside my car when i come to red lights before but shrugged it off and thought it was a bad cat, since i was going to replace my cat system anyways i just ignored it and dealt with the smell. as i was half way to work my oil light came on FLASHING which i found was really strange since i topped off my engine oil 2 weeks ago, so i took her easy and slowly drove to work so i can park and take a look under my hood. as i opened up the hood, to my surprise i saw oil spray on the underside of my hood, all over my belts and downwards . i quickly turned off my engine and filled my engine up with about 2 quarts of oil that was left in my trunk and stared her up again for a couple minutes to lube up everything so nothing will seize and turned her off. i waited about 15 - 20 minutes to let my car cool off and checked my coolant and it was still topped up, when i was driving to work i noticed no power loss but i did notice a noise that was not normal. i was also driving normal, no abrupt acceleration, no speeding, nothing!! just normal gradual acceleration. i have uploaded a video to Youtube for you guys to see and hear. any help and or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
-Vert

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

Check ur power steering fluid, thats what that line is that u said was leaking. The noise i think is that pump right in front of you being low on fluid. I would start there.

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

yeah i got to get a buddy to help me pick up some PS fluid and see if that will take the noise away, don't want to drive it till i'm sure what my problem is. i also just checked my engine oil and it's good right now but that is after dropping in about 2 quarts. if you guys need me to take any pics for you guys let me know and i'll go take some and upload it.

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

sounds like the p/s fluid is low, if its spraying in that area, I'd keep an eye on that top p/s hose, and have someone turn the steering wheel to try to locate the leak.

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

I'm not a mechanic or anything near that but it sounds like it's either a leak somewhere in the power steering system or your power steering pump is failing; could be both. Try this: turn your steering wheel all the way left and check if your power steering reservoir is bubbling or foaming. If so, there's a leak in the power steering system somewhere.

*please correct me if I'm wrong. I don't have any auto mechanic education.

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

went out to get some PS fluid and gave her a test and my pump seems to be gone, got to replace it, my mechanic came by to take a look as well, he said i should be able to drive it back to his place, i just got to keep filling to fluid till i make it. he also said i might need to replace all my belts in that area cause of that leak, a couple seals and tubes, then he's going to diagnose my car again cause he said the oil spray doesn't only look like it's just PS fluid, he hopes he's wrong about that one though.

well my Lude is out of commission for at least a week cause my mechanic is crazy busy cause of the **** weather we've had. time to use the wife's Lancer, Lol

i'll keep you guys updated as i find out more....i guess it's time for me to stand at Cash Corner to pay for these repairs, Lol

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

Cut the belt off the power steering pump. Drive it around with no power steering til he can fix it.

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

I had an oil spray not too long ago, dunno if it fits, because I was leaking massive amounts of oil, and was spraying everywhere. My oil cooler o ring blew. Very typical for preludes. Just something to look at.

i might just do that if he is too backed up in work. how much a PITA is it to drive without power steering?

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

It's not that bad. It's not easy, either. Your shoulders will be sore for the first couple days just because you're not used to using those particular muscles. My H22 Accord didn't have power steering. It's only bad at a standstill.

As far as the cooler o-ring, that's pretty common, especially in colder climates. However, the oil spray pattern on the underside of the hood would suggest it is coming from the front of the engine (front meaning from the crank pulley end), rather than the side of the engine, where the oil cooler rests. If it were the oil cooler, you would have smoke, burning oil smell, a large puddle of oil, and rapid loss of oil at a rate of about half a quart per minute. I had that o-ring bust on my last H22 in my Accord. Lost almost all my oil in a matter of minutes. Luckily, I was letting the car warm up and had just left my house on my way to work. About two stop signs later, I realized something was up when I smelled oil and saw smoke.

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

so....$720 later i got my car back. had to have her towed to my mechanics place, replace a head gasket, oil sensor, o-ring and my entire power steering line including both hard lines plus the pressure sensor. my mechanic took the time to clean up my engine bay, really nice and clean right now, just need to clean off the underside of my hood now. for some odd reason when i'm at idling at a red light for long enough i still smell burning oil. i was hoping that the repairs on the leaks would remedy this but i guess it's back to the drawing board for me....

Re: Oil Spray?!?!

I bet what you're smelling is leftover residue from the leak. It is bound to get into some tight spots that weren't cleaned, and when your engine gets hot, it's burning off.

Just keep an eye under the hood and on your fluids, and if they're alright, keep driving it, it'll eventually go away.
