Power Steering Pump??

Hey guys, I went out to start my 2001 Prelude SH the other morning and found the clutch stuck to the floor with no back pressure. I has been pretty cold here the last few days and was thinking I had some water in the clutch fluid and it froze but apparently the the Master Cylinder and Slave Cylinder were leaking big time. While the mechanic was fixing it I told him to go ahead and change the timing belt while he was under there cause it needed to be done. (Come to find out the timing belt wasn't to far from snapping.) But here is where the problem comes in. I arrived to pick up my lude and the mechanic asked me if the the power steering pump was making any noises before I brought it in. (which it wasn't) But I took it home cause I really need it tomorrow. But anyway when i turned the wheel sharp to get into a parking spot there is this terrible grinding/rattling sound and smelled something kinda burning and a little smoke coming from under the hood. Help Please!?

Im wondering if there is anything accompanied with changing the timing belt that could have caused this?

Thanks Guys

Re: Power Steering Pump??

Maybe the belt is too tight on the pump.

Hopefully it's nothing to do with the new timing belt job (like rubbing on the cover)

Re: Power Steering Pump??

I wonder if the pump was on its way out and then when they took the belt off it knocked something loose in it or something? I think I will give him a call tomorrow. I also read on another forum that if they put any fluid in the pump other than the OEM steering fluid it will cause some really weird problems.

Re: Power Steering Pump??

The same thing happened to me ('94 Si) when i got my timing belt done over the summer. I had it parked for a couple months until i could buy a new pump. Anyway, the new pump turned out to be faulty so i returned it and put the old one back on. I started it to move the car back to where i parked it and everything was fine.

My guess is that the return line and/or the o-ring on the pressure line were loose. I didnt replace my o-ring but it's still running fine for now. My advice would be to replace the o-ring on the hard line and make sure your return line is secure first before anything else.

Re: Power Steering Pump??

Remove the power steering for the cost of 2 small hose clamps. The write up is on this site.
