Distributor Cap and Rotor - Does MFR Matter?

Quick question/poll. When looking at replacement cap and rotor, does manufacturer matter as far as going with like a YEC (OEM) vs. the Autozone replacement? Online costs are about the same for OEM vs. buying the local auto parts replacement, but just curious if there's any documented difference running one vs. the other?

In hindsight I probably should have ordered and waited for the YEC to come in, but I just grabbed what was at the local auto parts store (Dis. cap, rotor and PCV valve) to do a tune up this weekend. I figured those were basic parts and shouldn't be anything special to them but I'm no expert by any means.

I did install NGK iridium plugs and NGK wires though...lol.

I bought the AUTOZONE rotor and that is straight up a POS and doesnt connect smoothly or right as well as the Honda OEM does!!! They last pretty long so why not go straight with the OEM Honda one!! You'll be glad you did!!

The AUTO rotor has a thin plate of metal with fibers on both sides, but the OEM Honda one has a thick metal plate all alone with no fiber walls making the contact stronger and reliable!!

I may go ahead and order the YEC cap and rotor and just replace them. $40 wasted on the Advance Auto version if I do. Honestly one of the main things making me think about replacing them (other than reliability/performance) with OEM is the new cap I installed is this funky brown color, doesn't look right in there at all, lol.

As a general rule, MFR does matter. There are certain things that are pretty much the same across every manufacturer, but the distributor cap is not one of them.

Lesson learned, glad it was on cheaper parts. Just ordered the YEC cap and rotor from partsgeek. Even if there's no difference, I wont have an ugly brown distributor cap with blue NGK wires sticking out anymore.

Anyone want a BWD cap and rotor? Barely used! lol.

Try and find a Beck/Arnley part. 75% of the time it's a rebagged OEM part

Re: Distributor Cap and Rotor - Does MFR Matter?

I put BWD parts on my Integra a few months ago from O'Reilly (I work there, it's best stuff we have, even has a lifetime warranty) and the parts work fine, obviously better than the original parts that were still on the car at 286,000 miles. Other than B/A, or BWD (Borg-Warner) I would just go Honda OEM.

I got a napa cap and rotor made in japan. Black color cap looks OEM and it works great.... Paid less than 30 bucks in total too

Get the Vision cap and rotor on eBay. The guys that sell them on there are really good and quality is top notch!

Re: Distributor Cap and Rotor - Does MFR Matter?

Thanks for the info all. Hopefully I won't be replacing these for a long time. Just going to throw the YEC cap and rotor in when they get here and hopefully be set for a while.

Re: Distributor Cap and Rotor - Does MFR Matter?

Swapped them out today, really fast shipping from partsgeek.com, must admit I'm impressed.

Don't you love the BWD cap with the blue NGK wires??

Here's the YEC stuff, if nothing else, I do like the cap being black again, lol.

Biggest difference in the rotors I noticed is the BWD was a solid metal piece where the YEC seems to have some type of coating on either side of the contact:

BWD rotor

YEC rotor

Got it all thrown back in and back together, cranked up and drove around the block.

I probably won't drive it tomorrow as the weather will be nice, will have to ride!
