Ball joint sizes

Alright PZ, I've been concentrating on my suspension recently, and have come across the two front lower ball joints that are slightly worn. attached is the picture (I'm looking at reference # 3 & 4). I can find an aftermarket balljoint for part #3, but am having trouble finding one for part #4. Anyone know where I can find one? or a set for each side? Thanks for the help.

Other brands are significantly cheaper, which is why I would like to stay away from the Honda parts, any experience with quality of specific brands?

Re: Ball joint sizes

i'm trying to find lower ball joints to replace both of my current front ones but it seems like everywhere i go, no one sells just the ball joint. not even honda. people are saying that i have to replace the whole lower control arm to get the ball joint. and i was even told at another place that just to get that stupid lower ball joint i would have to replace the whole sterring knuckle.. any suggestions?

Re: Ball joint sizes

Just to let you know you WILL need a press or a ball joint press to get them out. They are not easy to do with out a lift and air tools.

You can buy them separate but most places will tell you to by the knuckle or the arm due to the press fit. Most people don't have the tools to remove the ball joint.

Moog makes them, and so do other replacement auto parts places. They go for about $20-$50 depending on quality.

Re: Ball joint sizes

I will not be doing the work myself, when it comes to pressing ball joints and bearings, I always take it to a local machine shop. I found the Moog Fr. Lower balljoint, but cannot find the other lower ball joint, I guess I'll just order that one from Honda.

M_stack, why replace the LCA?? there are no ball joints pressed into it! Both lower ball joints (on the SH) are pressed into the knuckle.

anyways, thanks for the help

i was just told that they were pressed into the lower control arm and then someone else told me about the knuckle. but it just seems that i can't buy the lower ball joint itself anywhere. everyone wants to sell me the lower control arm or the whole stupid knuckle.

Re: Ball joint sizes

you won't need to replace the LCA, just swap the bushings out with Energy suspension bushings. The knuckle has the ball joint pressed into it. buy a whole new knuckle. Do you have a base or a SH? the diagram for a base model is different.

Re: Ball joint sizes

understandable. I'm by no means a mechanic, but looking at each diagram from the base and SH, it seems that #4 in the attached picture is for the SH radius rod. #3 is for the Knuckle to LCA connection which, in my opinion, seems to be the same on both base and SH models. You may want to wait or someone else to confirm this.

I own an SH, so I'll probably by aftermarket BJs for the Knuckle to LCA (#3); and OEM BJs for the radius rod connection (#4).

Re: Ball joint sizes

The for sale thread might be outdated, but The actual reference thread was great, definately worth the wait, I'm glad I didn't end up impulse buying last week.

I just ordered the kit and radius rod BJs, came out to $167 after shipping and taxes. I don't think that is too bad, it's the labor that will probably kill me.

Re: Ball joint sizes

I wouldn't buy those, only because there is no manufacturer listed and they are out of the package already. I'm picky and try to do important things with quality parts from a reputable place.

go to hondapartsnow.com, search for part number 04510-SL5-000. it should be the balljoint kit, get that. a little more, but they are Honda parts.

or you can click the link that OGS posted and do a little reading.

ball joints are difficult to remove. when I did them on my van I'm glad we had air tools and a lift.

I'm glad the guide helped, that guy gets rep for a great bit of research and purchasing of extra parts just to help us all.

I don't know the process, just that there is a special tool. I will be taking mine to a local machine shop, just to save me the hassel.

I picked mines up from AutoZone and never had a problem with them. Lifetime warranty so if they start to go bad just replace them for a new one. They also rent the tool to press them out and in.

Re: Ball joint sizes

I just replaced both upper and lower balljoints. All we used was a big hammer and it wasnt that hard. The only issue we had was that the upper balljoint rubber boot is too big to go through the hole in the top arm. To get round it you slide the rubber boot off, put the balljoint in, then put the rubber boot back on ;)

I'm assuming you tried to order the replacement kit (part # 04510-SL5-000). go down to your local honda dealership, and ask for it. It should be under the recall TSB for 97-98 models only.

Re: Ball joint sizes

so i took the part number to the dealer and he ran it through. he can get it. but he printed off the diagram for the assembly and it looks like the steering knuckle for the SH differs from the one for the base model. the ball joints come seperately for the SH whereas for the base they come already pressed into the knuckle suggesting that you have to buy the whole knuckle to get the lower ball joints. he ran my VIN to get the part and it didn't come up with lower ball joints being sold seperately. so, are you absolutely sure that if i ordered the part number 04510-SL5-000 , that it would be a lower ball joint kit for the front wheels and that they would fit into my base model? cause i'm kind of led to believe that it is a part number for the SH. thanks for all your help guys.

I'm going to be blunt. had you read this thread, you would have noticed that the knuckles are indeed different. there are even pictures posted above. If you had clicked the link provided and read the first post, you would know that the guy who posted it, had personally experienced this issue and spent a lot of time and money trying to find a solution, which he found. PLEASE USE A LITTLE BRAIN POWER HERE!! If you are so concerned with the information provided being wrong, then go buy a new knuckle, which again, was offered as advice to begin with.
