Icon5 Oil is leaking and burning off engine while driving.

Hi, my prelude which I previously purchased June of 2011 is leaking oil, badly. It seems i'm putting oil in the car every day. Ive gone around forums, and websites looking for answers and Ive come to find out this problem is common for aging preludes.

The problem with my oil leak is that it leaks oil while the car is parked, but as I drive the oil leaks even more and burns off. When I come to a stop light I see the oil burning off and its really embarrassing. I hate the fact that my car looks like its about to explode and everybody around me sees it. Even as I have the heat on the oil smoke burns through my vents causing a horrible smell as you might imagine.

Ive gone out and replace the valve cover gasket, tightened the oil filter, my question is what is the next step to take? I was thinking about getting the engine bay cleaned out and seeing if a mechanic can diagnose the problem that way. Can anybody tell me whats going on with my prelude, I don't want to think I have bought a lemon because I really admire this car.

What do i have to replace? How much is the part? How much for instillation and labor? PLEASE HELP A ROOKIE!!

Check your pan and oil cooler, they tend to leak. Oil cooler is the oring thats inbetween cooler and block. What leaks on The oil pan is the seal which is just honda bond, both are a diy job if you are kinda handy but may be a pita if your not used to doing your own work. I would check those two spots first.

You should clean off all the parts covered in oil and at least try to figure out where the leak is coming from. As Scarface said, the oil cooler is a bad boy. It tends to leak.

Have you replaced the o ring around the distributer cap? This was where all my oil was leaking from. Fixed most of it. But recently it looks as if it may be leaking around the vtec solenoid. I also replaced the valve cover gromets and gasket.

It's the oil cooler gasket.

Re: Oil is leaking and burning off engine while driving.

Sounds like the O-ring bc I had that issue before wheer I had smoke coming out of my car and turns out that my O-ring was worn and was leaking oil onto my exhaust pipe before the flex part. By it dripping onto the pipe would cause the burn smoke smell. And I too would leak in park and leak even more while in drive. Expecially when after driving to where I would go that when I would leave that underneath would be a puddle size oil spill.

Ended up gettin a oil change and replacing the O-ring and I was good!!! I feel bad for all those spots I parked and streets bc I literally was dumpin mad oil all on the ground and topping the oil almost like every other day.

Re: Oil is leaking and burning off engine while driving.

if you really want to get down to it, then it may be your oil piston rings. try and get a compression test, and if it doesn't look good then that means your compression rings are bad which also means your oil rings are shot. that was the problem with my old engine. but my new engine leaks let's say, a quarter size puddle over night, so it isn't much but still noticeable. best thing for you to do now, is like they said, clean off the engine the best you can where you believe oil is leaking from, and then drive it about 20 miles or so and check your spots.

Check the VTEC solenoid gasket. I had the same problem a couple of months ago.

The part number is : 36172-P08-015 (GASKET, SOLENOID BASE)

Good luck.

Re: Oil is leaking and burning off engine while driving.

Step 1: Find the source of the leak
Step 2: Fix the source of the leak

Not a hard concept. We can't tell you where your leak is coming from if you don't even know what general area it's at.

Re: Oil is leaking and burning off engine while driving.

when i started having leaks i changed the oil cooler oring that thing had gotten hard and flat it just fell apart once i was able to get it out. also check your bolts on the oil pan, i had a small leak recently, and went under the car today and the bolts were a little loose. I don't know how this happens but i have heard of it happening before that's why i checked them. i think that may have been my issue. like everyone else has said you have to get under the car and clean it good, its easier to find the leak that way.
