Stiff gas pedal....sometimes

I searched the forums for gas pedal, stiff gas pedal, etc, didn't find anything other than lots of threads about clutch pedals so I'm posting this one.

Sometimes the gas pedal on our prelude seems stiff, doesn't seem to be all the time though. Sometimes it takes a fairly firm tap to depress it when taking off in 1st, don't really feel it at other times and it doesn't seem to resist travel once I get it pressed.

It's wasting gas and slightly irritating when taking off and having to rev the engine due to hitting the pedal hard, it sounds like someone just learning how to drive a 5 spd, and quite frankly I'm an expert...lol.

Anyone else have this issue? I checked the throttle cable at the engine, it looked ok, not sure if maybe the butterfly valve should be looked at? Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Can you pull the throttle cable (in the bay) with your fingers? Does it feel smooth there?

Floor mat getting in the way?

Needs more WD-40?

1. I'll check the cable again, it seemed ok by hand, but I have the strength of 10 men.....especially after a few Bud Lights.....

2. I moved the floor mat back and away, still felt stiff.

3. I use bacon grease to lube all parts. Maybe that explains why fat slobbering men keep chasing me when I drive the Prelude.

I'll check these, appreciate the tips!

Ah, you need to clean the throttle body......remove the intake pipe and either remove the throttle body from the IM and spray throttle body cleaner into the back of the throttle body or spray it on a rag and wipe inside there. The main thing to go for is the butterfly valve and all around it. There is probably a nice buildup of gunk on it. It should be nice and smooth after.

^^ I 100% agree!! Clean it out real good. Around the walls and the butterfly plate itself on both sides and I guarantee your problem will be fixed.

I had this happen to me, I'd say if you feel comfortable doing it, just take your time off completely and wipe it all down and spray it all out with tb cleaner. It's only four bolts, two wire connectors, and a couple hoses... And then relube the cable and all with lithium grease..
