Icon2 I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

Mods, feel free to move this to the appropriate section.

I joined this forum to learn more about the awesome Prelude, and you guys have swayed me to the point of purchasing one and selling my lovable 1994 Integra. I've found a particular one that I really like and was hoping the mass of members on here could give me some pointers to look out for and an opinion as to whether I should, indeed, get it or not. I'm still working out a time and place to drive the vehicle, but it looks fine and the seller is cooperating within reason. He says he doesn't want the car anymore as his age and height don't work well with the low-slung chassis of the Prelude, because he was using it for a daily driver. The only thing i'm kind of suspicious about is that fact that all the new parts the advertisement lists, were installed by him and/or his son. I understand that could be good or bad, but I'm going to drive it anyway and see. I'm providing a link to the Craislist ad it is featured in as well as providing a link to the pictures he has sent me privately to let you get a good idea of what the car looks like. It's incredibly clean in my opinion, but you may think otherwise.

looks clean to me and looks like the owner has done what needs to be done from a maintenance perspective. Assuming she drives good, I'd think you could get it for a steal.

Define "a steal". I'm perfectly fine paying what he's asking with as clean as it is and all the maintenance that's been performed.

Re: I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

wow dude, really? negotiation 101... never agree to asking price.

You could at least knock off $500 of that.

If I were you I would offer $3k and work negotiations from there, if/when you even get to that point (after test drive and checking out the car)

Assuming you go through with it, you're welcome in advance. I probably just helped prevent you from literally giving away $500-1,000 because of your inability to negotiate!

Don't take it personally, just trying to help. Keep us posted on your progress and whether or not you go through with it.

I'm still going to negotiate some but I would be comfortable paying what he's asking, honestly.

^that. I bought my SH Lude for $3300 with only 162K. The guy had it listed for $4500. Dude, do yourself a favor and cut your offer if you pay the asking price for anything on CL you're wasting mod money. In my experience, waving cash in front of his face will lower the price dramatically lol

Re: I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

See, I can't actually wave cash in his face, I'm taking out a vehicle loan from my local bank. The payments are perfect and I got a low interest rate. We would have to agree on a price then sign all the papers.

Re: I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

Take out a smaller personal loan and then use the car as collateral on a secured loan after you make your offer and drive away. Or wait for a better deal. Either way, its your money brotha. At the end of the day its up to you

I thought about that, but it would be too complicated. I'm glad I got this loan, to be honest, I didn't think I was going to.

@Aced... I wouldn't have it any other way. I'd have to have the receipts for the parts, as the work was done at-home.

Check the trunk spare tire area for water leak, check to see the engine is not burning or leaking excessive oil.

Re: I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

I've read through the Buying a Fifth Gen thread but I didn't know if there was anything else. RandallSharp mentioned an ignition problem that had to do with the immobilizer system malfunctioning and to make sure I try it out and listen on a cold start. Any other ideas?

Here is some stuff you'll want to do that isn't covered in that FAQ:

1. Did they do the timing belt themselves? If so, do you trust that they actually changed it? This is an interference motor right? You're betting the cost of a new motor that they aren't lying.

2. Check the level and color of the oil. Obviously if it's very low that is bad. If it looks like a chocolate milkshake run away. That indicates coolant is getting into the oil and is very bad. I usually check under the oil fill cap, funk can collect there that can give you an idea of how dirty the oil is or has been.

3. Check the condition of the coolant. This can be tough on some cars, but again chocolate milk color is very bad. Regular old, dirty coolant is not great but not a deal breaker on a $3k car.

4. Run your hands along the width of the tread of each tire. If the tread blocks are choppy or uneven on any part of the tread you've likely got an alignment or suspension problem. Figure $100-500 to sort that out, plus new tires depending on how bad it is.

5. Look under the car and visually inspect the boots for the CV joints, ball joint and tie rods. A torn boot means you need a new boot or a new part. Not a big deal if you can DIY, but easily $100-500 at a shop depending on the part, if it needs an alignment, etc.

6. Easy test for bad CV joints: In a parking lot put the steering wheel at full lock left or right. Turn in a circle forward and backward with light acceleration. If you hear clicking as you accelerate that indicates a bad CV joint. Do the same test in the other direction.

7. Every body panel on the car should have a VIN sticker from the factory with the car's vin number on it. If the car is missing one or more of those stickers, that panel has been replaced for some reason. Good way to check for accidents that aren't in a carfax.

8. Run the vin here - https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck That site will tell you for free if it's been totaled or has any history of theft.

Those are some quick easy tests that cover potentially expensive problems.

Re: I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

^^ what he said. There's alot that you need to look in to especially with such high miles. Personally I would wait for something with less miles, but if you're desperate for a car then go for it. I went and bought my 5g impulsively when I sold my 04 accord and I regret it alittle. I didnt do all the tests that I should have and put almost 1500 into the car when I bought it.

Btw, bought a 98 125k miles and it needed brakes all around for $3700. Negotiate if you want it. Dont pay whats being asked. Its called a mark up, people and dealers do it so that when you negotiate they still get close to what they actually wanted for the car. Good luck man.

There is def. a lot of room to play with in the price range, I picked my lude up for 2400 with the same amount of miles almost and the seller was wanting 3800 so make a low offer and go from there, save you some money and you can invest in some quality parts on down the road with the money you saved.

Re: I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

Thanks for the ideas. I plan on really, and I mean REALLY looking at the vehicle. Checking every fluid level, I'll listen to it on a cold start, etc. I did the same thing for my Teggy, I actually got under it and looked at EVERYTHING. I'm just tired of the Teg, and I don't have a car to drive while I get its rust repaired (needs both new quarter panels). I still have yet to set a firm time to go look at the car.

Re: I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

I see we're all saying negotiate down to save on mod money. lol Its true tho... with the money I "saved" talking down the seller of my Lude, I was able to start off right and fix all the issues that I found during the inspection. Rear main seal, cam seal, bushings all around, egr valve (cleaned), new clutch and flywheel, new plugs and wires, header, ignition, Type S intake and front and rear sway bars were installed with the "savings". Another tip--if you can find minor problems (that you know you can fix) during your inspection with the seller, point them out and use them as a bargaining tool.

Re: I need an opinion on a particular car, please!

I looked at the car finally, and drove it. It drives nice, it wasn't aligned properly, as the steering wheel is rotated about an inch to the left. The clutch felt funny (too short of travel), there was some rust on the passenger quarter panel, the interior was pretty damn clean, all doors/hinges worked fine, lock cylinders worked fine. The big infractions were the CEL (the EGR valve is disconnected, he says it's broken) and the broken headlight assembly on the driver's side. All suspension bushings looked alright, brakes were OK, etc. I told him specifically that I couldn't pay what he was asking (3500 is a stretch for it, but he apparently owes 3300 and won't budge lower than 4000.

All in all, I'm still searching for a clean fifth gen under $4500. If anybody knows anybody, let me know, please.
