Found One I Want

Hey everyone

I am new to the forum and found a 1999 Prelude base model with auto transmission I want to buy. My girlfriend and I just got a new car together, her lease ended and I traded in my lease. I live in Key West, FL which is a small island and was looking for an older Prelude or S2000. I found a 1999 Prelude with only around 50,000 miles for $5,000. Its being sold at a Honda dealership and the carfax looks good. I wanted to get some opinions on it since I think the price is a little lower than I expected.

Here is the link.

Re: Found One I Want

either it's really dirty, it's already started to fade, or it's been painted - hard to tell from a picture.

make sure it's not throwing any codes, drive it around and see if the cel comes on basically.

check all of the vin numbers...firewall, engine block next to the oil filter), door jam, title, get a carfax as well.

look for any damage from an accident

50k so the timing belt/tensioner/water pump probably haven't been done yet - they will need it around 70k.

Honda red is known to fade, and auto's are known to fail. low miles so you may get away with the trans being ok for awhile. Just expect it to happen eventually.

Are you specifically looking for an automatic transmission?

Re: Found One I Want

+1 to everything Wing said.

man I donno, something seems fishy. That low of mileage with no mechanical issues and no reported wrecks? I would think would go for more $$$.

Overall, the CarFax looks good, but the 2nd owner only had it for 6 months before selling it to a dealer? Definitely seems like a red flag to me...

I paid well more that $5k for my '01 SH, but based on those two pics alone, I would argue mine is head and shoulders in better shape. I also bought from a private seller, so bear in mind if you buy from a dealer you're going to pay sales tax.

Also just an FYI, that Honda dealer has really bad reviews on Google.

Re: Found One I Want

Thanks for the replies. I am not specifically looking for auto but where I would drive it is almost all stop and go. I emailed the dealership to send some more pics of the car before I make a trip to see it but havent heard back yet. I also thought the paint looked a little dull in the pics.

Re: Found One I Want

Auto tranny... not good. Red paint... also not good. I can tell you as the owner of a factory Honda red Lude it WILL need to be repainted. I bought mine as a project car and we have a booth so the paint wasnt a problem but trust me you will need to take care of it sooner or later.

If you have no preference, I would avoid getting one with an auto trans.

FWIW the carfax is clean on that car.

You won't find an S2000 worth buying for $5k.

CarFax only tells half the story... ask any independent auto mechanic/inspector...

Allow me to link this story, it's a sticky situation where the carfax did show the story but the car itself was not inspected thoroughly enough via the purchaser.

Ripped off hard. - NASIOC

To fully understand the end result - you just need to read the posts done from the OP, i'll do a quick summary:

Person 1 needed a more reliable car for work/travel vs using his highly modified STI in which was not practical for his job occupation.

Person 2 had a practical vehicle that he was looking to sell/trade

the deal was made and person 1 traded+cash for person 2's vehicle

Carfax checked out and vin's matched. - fast forward a few months

Person 1 had the new car broken into, items of value stolen. took said vehicle to dealership and discovered upon getting an alarm installed and new key made that the vins did not match the key codes. Further inspection discovered that the said vehicle was stolen and the vins were covered up.

Person 1 then confronted person 2 and the arguments began

Person 2 only had said vehicle for a couple of months prior to trading to person 2. DMV and all records allowed title to be transfered without any red flags (odd I know)

It was later discovered (supposedly) that person 2 was not aware said vehicle was stolen. He was basically let off the hook with there being no proof of knowing. (bs if you ask me) What happened to the vehicle that had the vin numbers removed from and put on the stolen vehicle was never found. But that unknown vehicle is the one that had the clean carfax therefor it looked good enough to own to person 1 since it "checked out fine"

Person 1 ended up loosing said vehicle to be repo'd since it was stolen property - and thus left without a vehicle. The bank paid the owed money from the STI since he had a loan to pay on it and lost all rights to the STI that he had traded for the stolen vehicle. (since the bank had purchased the STI)

Person 1 now has been through a few months of hell and time of dealing with event, never will see his STI again, and is without the money wasted on the trade/ value of newer car.

Moral of the story - inspect the car throughly yourself, never trust someone else's word let alone a background check of the vehicle since they never tell the full story.

(not trying to put any fear into purchasing a car, but be aware of what can happen if not thorough in the inspection of potential used car.)

Re: Found One I Want

Frankly, I'd leave it alone. The dealer selling it doesn't have the best reputation around Tampa, and the few times I've been over there, their cars tend to look scruffy. That's all subjective, but I wouldn't come halfway up the state for this car.

Stop-and-go or not, I wouldn't get an automatic Prelude, either...besides the known issues with the 5th gen's autobox, they're just not as much fun...look how many people out there are doing conversions to manual trannys.

Re: Found One I Want

I guess I disagree with the comments on the auto. If you take dare of the tranny it is fine. You can't get it and rag on it like a civic. The prelude is more luxury in my book and thus treated with more respect than a civic. U get a civic to rag on you get a prelude because it a better class of car.

^ you have one hell of a definition for a "luxury" car!

I think I know what you're trying to say: the Lude was always marketed by Honda as a "sports" car... but I'm not sure they ever thought it was a luxury sports car. Maybe. More like the product line they chose to showcase new tech like ATTS, for example.

The Civic is just, well... the Civic. Gotta love em just a little bit though. We've all had at least one... lol
