About to shoot my car..a couple of times..

So i learned about the stupid service recall (on the balance shaft) the hard way. The good thing is that my belts were so close to busting so Im glad the seal went first, but I am having the infamous balance shaft vibration after the whole timing belt change...
Ive seen all the diagrams and even put the screwdriver in the back of the block near the rear balance shaft ... But it does seem like it goes all the way through in many places. Is there one hole that works? is there anything or a picture of where the rear balance shaft should align? Pleaseee help, Ive been without my car for 2 weeks now and Im going crazy..
i have a 99 prelude and its standard...

Re: About to shoot my car..a couple of times..

You may THINK the screwdriver is going alllll the way thru, but its prolly getting caught somewhere. I've taken a picture so you can visually see what your sticking the screwdriver into, and so you can hopefully feel with the screwdriver and rotating the BS once it's FULLLYYY seated.

And here's a pic of the BS installed, showing the access hole, and once its perfectly lined up with the hole of the BS at the bottom, its a straight shot in.

The screwdriver length is most important, since it'll be an OBVIOUS difference when its all the way thru, or just hitting the BS. I knew I should've measured the distance from the access hole to the back of the journal last night. Maybe tonight if your lucky

But I feel a regular screwdriver with a 3.5" length prolly isn't long enough.

Re: About to shoot my car..a couple of times..

This picture helped out perfect, but I couldnt use a screwdriver because it hit the cv axle.... i fortunately found and old shattered screwdriver missing the handle and was able to use that to line it up and it worked! Thank you very much!

I will never forget how to do this timing job ever again!

One quick question... has anyone ever felt a deep rumble from the motor after changing everything out? Its nothing like the vibration when the shaft is not aligned, but the motor feels and sounds deeper than I remember it feeling...

Re: About to shoot my car..a couple of times..

I did my timing belt recently and had to time the balance shafts again. The whole cabin was vibrating and the engine sounded alot louder. I locked in the balance shaft with an allen key and now the vibration lessened but it's still there. There were zero vibrations and engine was quiet before I did anything.

Now the cabin vibrates and engine drones at low speeds until i get to ~65mph. Everything feels normal cruising at 65-70mph.

I'm thinking about redoing it for the third time.

Re: About to shoot my car..a couple of times..

You sure the FRONT BS was lined up as well? That one's a lil easier to mess up since you can't "lock" it in place, only visually check it.

You timing might be one tooth off on the timing belt. I'd also recheck the timing marks, make sure the two marks on the cam line EXACTLY up with each other and the top of the head. It is easy to be slightly one tooth off on one of the cams.

Re: About to shoot my car..a couple of times..

Vibrations are finally gone. It was the rear balance shaft not timed correctly.

However, now there's a womp womp womp sound coming from the timing belt area as well as a slight whine while driving.

I installed a manual tensioner. I'll try loosening the bolt from the outside and retighten it.
