5th Gen Cat Back Exhaust

Can anyone tell me where to find a relatively cheap cat back exhaust system for my 2001 Prelude? I don't want it to sound to ricey or like a fart can. Price range for me would be around 5-600 dollars at the most. If anyone can give me some information on where I could get one let me know. Also if you're local to anywhere in California and know of a place that would be cool too. Thanks guys

Re: 5th Gen Cat Back Exhaust

600 is usually max for a new cat back, unless you end up looking for a Mugen...they can get pretty pricy new.

Honestly - just go custom. If you're looking for performance - 3" with your choice of muffler and resonator. If just sound, 2.5" with 1 long resonator and your choice of muffler....(or buy a complete name brand for sound, check all the videos on youtube and search around the site for clips/pictures of the different types)

I have the fujitsubo legalis R.. It's a little more expensive but I LOVE it! Consider the apexi world sport 2, it's pretty quiet.

Different area's of Cali are more lenient vs others and will look over some parts such as the exhaust, so it depends on where he's at. Even if he were in a strict area that would not allow a custom exhaust or aftermarket exhaust period - the only "legal" aftermarket exhaust in that case would be a Mugen since it's sorta an "optional" oem part which is also badged from Jasma making it an emissions friendly part over in Japan.

Either way - if in a strict area that wont pass anything aftermarket, just swap between stock/aftermarket for inspection and problem solved.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget GReddy and Apexi made more than 1 style exhaust, so just saying the brand name doesn't tell which specific one you're referring to.

example: I use a Greddy, Evo2. (but regret not going custom)

***edit*** Here is a quick list of aftermarket exhausts for the 5th gen Prelude;

5Zigen Fireball Exhaust
A'PEXi N1 Series
A'PEXi World Sport
GReddy EVO 2
GReddy Evolution
GReddy SP
GReddy SP2
HKS Super Dragger
HKS Sport
Invidia SUS304
Mugen
RS*R Ex-Mag
Skunk2 Mega Power
Tanabe Ultra Medallion
Tanabe Super Hyper Medallion
Tanabe Super Racing Medallion
Thermal R&D

mugen is waste of money. you can get better exhausts with lower price.

thats pretty stupid if you dont have place to do it by yourself.
waste of money since exhaust doesnt even give you that much noticiable gains

Being a "waste of money" is just your opinion. Nothing more.

Not having a place to do it on your own is the issue of the person choosing to change their exhaust. I agree - I would not want to change every time for inspection but some members do not have the leeway in inspection as others do to allow for small modifications such as exhaust work. Here in the states - anything aftermarket is "deemed illegal" unless it was a factory option of course. It's kinda hard to argue with it but most stations across the country will look over most modifications. Cali is a hit or miss depending on which part since they do perform visual inspections and db tests if they feel they need to.

As for an exhaust not giving any noticeable gains - It depends on your setup, and any modifications/if any at all. A 3" exhaust will give some power for N/A cars where some with a turbo'd car may want 2.5 or just use a cutout.

Do a little research on the topic of exhausts and dyno tests etc - there's alot of information out there that even I, admit am not up to date on since so many factors can cause an increase or decrease in efficiency.

You don't see or feel oxygen, is there any point in breathing it in? - if you want to live, than i guess there is.

If somebody wants the sound - they get it because they want to hear it.

If somebody wants the minimal power gains - they get it because they want that number on paper.

If somebody wants it for the shiny new part and bling - well you get the picture.

There's a point to doing something if someone wants to do it. If there was no point, than it wouldn't be done. Sounds logical to me....

Almost sounds like our favorite TypeS/SH Hybrid member disliking any form of vehicle modification.

Re: 5th Gen Cat Back Exhaust

I just honestly dont think that this our question maker needs that kind of exhaust..
I bet that hes not building race car, so it doesnt matter that do he get that 5 extra ponies what he could only see on paper AND I bet that he dont want to change it back and forth since its not legal.. and isnt it louder even with silencer? that might be also cop magnet.

doesnt suit his needs or how do you say it?

...I just always want to give some criticism that people, in this case this question maker, would think about this in difference angles and make the best decision for him.
its just usually that people dont think what suits for somebody, they give the answer what suit themself

That's understandable.
Reason being why we answer the question(s) OP asks and let him/her decide for them self if they want to go through with it.

Giving extra insight for the OP to take in consideration before making their decision based on personal experience helps as well. Example being the resonators inside Greddy exhausts are known to go bad thus being a costly repair and not the best choice if on a budget.

-I answered the OP's question in my first post. As well as extra information as far as pricing and performance/ sound. I could have said right away that I have a Greddy Evo2 and it sounds amazing until the baffle within the resonator breaks, but that's just my opinion since to others it may sound horrible. So searching for sound clips would help. I didn't assume he wants power, I just gave him the options as per pipe size/combos etc. Which will also help any other member (new or old) if they come across this thread in the future with similar questions.

Everyone's here to help. It's what the forum is here for.

On a 200hp engine (assuming there's no losses..) 5 ponies is still a couple percent. Throw on the headers and exhaust and you got a few more ponies.. Even if you only get 10hp total, that's still a good 5%. Of course you would notice that. Regardless, it's still nice to hear, feel and just know that your car is better.

How do you even what suits him or what his needs are? Maybe they're just wants. Don't say doing this or doing that is stupid because you see it as such and feel like projecting your feelings onto others.
I see you like to do that.

Let the man make his choice.

Re: 5th Gen Cat Back Exhaust

Enough bickering. There's enough threads on here and the entire internet regarding this topic.
Honestly, if you aren't going to do it yourself, you can get the muffler of your choice and go get a custom exhaust made and installed for less than any new catback.
It truly is all your preference though.
