JDM Swap

I found out today that my previous owner, ran the car with a huge tear through the intake tube (probably for a few months). Not that I can tell, the car runs great, and I can't feel any of the cel's reported misfires (as one mechanic said, "your car runs better than my brand new odyseey), but In light of the potential cost of diagnosing/curing my engine misfire (p1399 and p301), I am considering just doing an engine swap. Does anyone know roughly how much it would cost for the JDM engine and installation? And would most mechanics be able to do the job within a week? Thanks

Re: JDM Swap

Most private shops in my local area wants $500.00+ for labor. Any H22/H23A VTEC long block goes for $900+. I got my JDM H22A long block for only $900.00 with free shipping to my front door. Then later got my T2T4 LSD trans for $900.00 from the same place with free shipping.

thats always question mark, no one can quarantee that the engine has those miles they told you. like when they changed my engine, new engine reported to be driven something like 90k (under 100 anyway) but then when that head was to be ported, the porter said that most likely the engine was driven much more, it didnt look that new or something

Re: JDM Swap

Block only, kept the H23 trans :)

Tiger claims the avg mileage is 45k...... never really know though. This was the 2nd engine I purchased from them, no issues either time, and was delivered within 3 business days.

Re: JDM Swap

Members... How about we try to help him diagnose what seems to actually be a healthy engine instead of supporting a new engine?

If it comes to you doing a swap though... If your mechanic can't do the swap in a day then he needs to find a new profession.

Why don't you just try to run an engine and fuel treatment to clean the injectors and carbon build up and stuff before you go off the deep end and do a swap? Have you checked all your plugs and wires?

Has the car had these CELs since you got it?
Could it use a valve adjustment?
Have you performed a compression check?
Check the timing?

Re: JDM Swap

Type-S H22A or Euro-R H22A are your best bets if you're going the JDM swap route. The Euro-R is incredibly rare and expensive, but it comes with the T2W4 LSD transmission and the sought-after Euro-R intake manifold.

Re: JDM Swap

I appreciate all the feedback. Yes, Hardknoxbb2, The car did have a steady CEL on purchasing it, however I was told this was an o2 sensor. But, after 30 minutes on the highway, the CEL started flashing. I took it to a mechanic, who said the car was in solid conidition. He said the CEL was steady/flash , because it hadn't been reset. His analysis didn't make sense to me, becuase I know a flashing CEL means the engine is 'actively' misfiring. He noted that the wires, dizzy, and plugs were in good condition.

Then a couple nights ago, I noticed a 3 inch gash on the bottom side of the intake tubing. It wasn't much of a leap to conclude that the engine must be contaminated, and causing the preignition/detonation condition, which is precisely what my flashing CEL reflects. I don't like the term 'misfire', as it somewhat misleads (no pun) one to hypothesize, that the ignition system, or low cylinder compression, is the direct culprit. In my case, when the engine is hot, the carbon deposits are abosorbing and retaining much of the ambient heat, which results on, certain random cycles, the detonation/preignition event. The only alterative, and viable explanation (or partial explanation), is that my egr ports need to be cleaned, which I have already scheduled, for Tuesday. For now, I have put some seafoam in the tank and case, and raised my octane to 95. This morning, I drove to work, about 30 minutes, and did not have a misfire. But all of this is a longshot, from what I've heard - If there is too much gunk in the engine, there is no way to get it all out, without tearing the engine apart. A $10 bottle of Seafoam, is an unlikely hero here. That's why I'm considering just putting a new block in it, or perhaps getting a rebuild/cleaning. Either way, it's going to cost a lot.

Re: JDM Swap

Hmmm.....I'm suddenly having second thoughts of the swap, after my Seafoam application. I haven't had a misfire for 2 days now, after feeding a bottle of the top engine cleaner. Friday, I split a bottle between my fuel tank and case. This afternoon I sucked half a bottle through the PVC, and watched a fair bit of smoke come out of the exhaust. I then took the lude for a late night joy ride. I pushed her hard for about half an hour, until I got the engine warm....No flashing CEL. It's too good to be true. Could it be true? Could Seafoam really be an overhaul in a can?
