Icon5 Problem--Need some advice...

Everything is progressing nicely with my 97 SH build, but kinda ran into a problem the other day. I let a friend take it down to Taco Hell and when he returned... no reverse. He said he missed a shift to third, but nothing major. After leaving a tapestry of swear words hanging over his head I did a little research on the site and found a few others have had the same issue. The new clutch is already broken in, it has a new shift cable, the other 5 gears are shifting perfectly. When I try to shift into reverse it won't allow the gear selector to pop in. I've tried the old "shift to 1st then reverse" Honda trick to no avail so I'm thinkin it's a syncro issue. Accordng to other posts on the site seems like it might be something that will correct itself with daily driving but does anyone have any thoughts? Thanks guys.

Re: Problem--Need some advice...

Just park where you don't have to reverse to get out

Reverse gears are straight cut rather than helical gears found in the forward gears, so it's always harder to engage. Have you tried 1st gear, pull up a bit, then reverse? I don't believe reverse even has a synchronizer.

Re: Problem--Need some advice...

5th gear and reverse work off the same syncro. there is no syncro for just reverse. if its kinda hard to get it into 5th or it tends to pop out of 5th then the syncro has gotten jagged around the edge. happend to my integra. just pulled the tranny apart and filed the thing down and it worked like new.

Have you tried putting it in gear with the car not running?

Re: Problem--Need some advice...

There's literally no issues on any of the other gears... I think ill try the first pull up then reverse idea. Its driving like a dream otherwise with the new clutch and flywheel...

Re: Problem--Need some advice...

UPDATE: After nearly two weeks of normal daily driving the reverse gear finally came back. I didn't have to force anything it just finally allowed me to shift normally. Pretty sweet.... my Christmas present from my Lude.
