Question regarding carbon hoods....

I asked this once before and didnt really get anywhere as most of the replies i got either didnt get what I was asking or they are just used to seeing the crap out there and think thats my only option.

Heres what started my search again.

While at a car show the other day I noticed a very nice M3. I walked up to it an noticed that his hood was painted silver to match the car but being half way open i could see under it. The weave on the skeleton was plain as day. I asked him if he would open it up all the way. He told me i could open her up and check it out for myself. The entire underside was carbon. The skeleton was carbon too. Now before when I asked this I was told that carbon flexes too much to use it in the skeleton. I suspected that was bs, so while i had the hood in my hands I gave it a little flex. It didnt move at all. No flex what so ever. And it still used the stock latch, which looked as though it was all metal layed into the carbon. I asked the guy but he was of little help. Seems he bought the car with the hood a few years back and didnt have much info.

Now to the question. I am looking for a REAL carbon fiber hood. OEM style. I DO NOT WANT a fiberglass hood with one layer of carbon on top. I do not want a fiberglass skeleton on the bottom. I want it in carbon. ALL CARBON. Can someone please help me find the real deal carbon hood?

Re: Question regarding carbon hoods....

there is none for ludes (because its so damn expensive).

like Evo's carbon trunk is 800$ vs dry carbon trunk 2000$

you could get one custom made but it would cost like few k's

do you wanna pay ~3000 for a hood?

Re: Question regarding carbon hoods....

Not 3k, but i can justify 1200. A shop by me that makes carbon speed boats said $1500 if I let them use mine as a template.

Re: Question regarding carbon hoods....

and how do you know that they make flawless product just like that without product development?

and really how much weight do you save there if its all CF without no GF skeleton? kilo or two? that doesnt mean that much.. I mean there is no big difference between their weights

So you want a real hood, and can only justify spending $1200 for it? LOL. Welcome to the world of you get what you pay for.

Re: Question regarding carbon hoods....

The fg skeleton is a no go due to how I plan to set it up. Its not about the weight savings. I want to paint the top to match the car. I want the carbon only visible on the underside of the hood. Defeats the purpose to have the fb skeleton hiding the carbon.

As to the shops quality, I have seen their products. From custom speed boats to hotrods, they always make something amazing. If they say they can do it I believe them.

As to the cost, $1200 seemed reasonable to me. Maybe try posting something helpful next time.

So I guess no one knows any one that makes what Im looking for. Figures.

Re: Question regarding carbon hoods....

it will have to be custom made like your assuming. there isn't a company that mass produces pure carbon parts for the prelude. best of luck in your search and if you do manage to figure this out let us know!

Yeah, tape in the engine bay, and my thought process was "stupid". Man Im not 16. I have been around cars my whole life. I will never make something in my car "look" like the real thing. If you don't get what I'm going for than you haven't been around high end sports cars.

This is kinda what I plan on doing.

Re: Question regarding carbon hoods....

You could just get a cf hood...and install a layer of cf ontop of the fiberglass skeleton...

Just a suggestion.

But you're better off getting a full 1 off custom one done.

how do you know that m3 wasnt taped ;) if its done properly its hard to know the difference.

its just... you dont have high end sports car. there is no product what youre talking about. youre not putting thousand of money there, its more likely that they'll do better job if somebody throw a 10k for them for a car build than you just give them 1000 and say "make me a hood" ... dont expect to get as quality stuff when youre single everyday joe than those hard gamers who spend several thousands into their "high end sport cars". just saying, I dont want to be rude but still there is difference between high class, top priority customers and us randoms.

like we made glass fiber hoods for our accords with my friend and if I remember right, it was like 4th what came out OK, do you think that they get the job done at first try because its your money what theyre messing with, again just my thoughts
