Weird noise from coilovers

Hi guys,

Need some advise on what I should check here. I installed function and form type 2 coilovers and it's is making weird rattling noise when I drive on bumpy road surfaces at local speed (not so much when on freeway). I check the strut and they look ok so I brought to a shop and they said since I changed the whole dynamics of the vehicle suspension that the only way to get rid of the noise is put the stock ones back on. Now I have seen enough people put coilovers on their cars with no problem at all so it must be something I did.

Has anyone got this same issue? I just think pinpoint the part that is causing the problem and have it replaced will be easier than swapping out the coilovers.

Thanks for any input.

Re: Weird noise from coilovers

Are the coilovers new? (i'm assuming so otherwise)

Double check that you have everything tightened down properly and your tophats are not loose. It's normal to hear more noise when installing coilovers since the ride quality isn't as great as it is stock.

Have you had an alignment done yet?
Have you checked your bushings/balljoints etc? Lowering the car causes extra stain on the other suspension components so the weakest/most worn part will wear faster at times.

I use TEIN SS, took me 2 years to find my suspension noise -_- They're a pain to pinpoint.

Re: Weird noise from coilovers

I also have Tein coils.. mine started making a squeaky bouncing sound. As they were still under warranty I brought the car into work and put it up on the lift.. could not duplicate the sound, rotated my tires and brought it back down.. they must have just settled weird the first time because the noise hast come back.. (yet)

Re: Weird noise from coilovers

noises might come from your old bushings also... stiffer suspension -> bushings live different life

Re: Weird noise from coilovers

A sound clip would be very helpful. Cause the sound might be from the stiff springs perfectly translating every bump through out the chasis, like the old fashion buses when they hit a pothole, Rattling aplenty.

Or, you put the wrong coilover at the wrong corner rattling, where you hit a hole/bump and the car springs off the shock body then rattles until settled.

Is this your first set?

sounds like an SHDRIVER answer. the most ignorant answer from someone who has no clue what he's talking about.

someone said it so i'll just reiterate it. make sure everything is tight.

if you can tell where it's coming from, front/back jack up the end you think it's coming from and support it with jack stands. get on the side you think it's coming from. it might help to have a friend with you as a second set of eyes, ears, and hands. get a good grip on the wheel/tire and push it up and down to try and mimic the noise. if you can mimic the noise, have the friend look, listen, and feel for the noise. look for things that are moving that shouldn't be. look for joints/bushings that might have excessive movement. sometimes it's best to feel. grab hold of suspension components and if you can feel the rattling there is your problem. check the hardware around that area to make sure it's tight. if it's tight, it's likely the bushing associated with the hardware. believe me i did this with my suspension rattle. took me about 2 minutes to find it.
