Did my oil pan gasket today...

Well I finally got to change my oil pan gasket. I had a fairly rough time dealing with one of the header stud/bolts. After 3 drill bits, four taps, and a lot of beating with a center punch I was able to use a bolt and nut combo and get it tightened back up. When I had the pan off I could see the 2 spots where it was leaking from so it really made me feel good to be sure that's where it was coming from. While I had it open i cleaned the pan and the bottom of the block to avoid this again.

So now that its done, all I have to do is wait 24 hours for it to cure and fill it with oil. Wish me luck, I really don't want to do this all again.

Re: Did my oil pan gasket today...

Yea the header bolts can be a pain....

Glad to hear your letting the oil pan gasket cure for 24 hours
Most people can't wait that long an end up having to redo the whole process over...

Re: Did my oil pan gasket today...

sum rednecks up here in hickville swear by cutting the bolt heads off (nut head) which releases all the pressure off the bolt stud then u jst take them out with vice grips that way they dnt break off inside the head. cuz in the rust belt they will almost always break off

Re: Did my oil pan gasket today...

Well I was hoping to be able to drive it today, but with the temp here not getting above 60 degrees F for the last 12 hours, I will be waiting till tomorrow to test her out. Better to be safe then sorry.

Also I removed the header to tap the broken bolt. The header came off with no issues at all, it was the damn bolt at the header to down pipe joint.

Re: Did my oil pan gasket today...

Update, finally got to test her. And she keeps throwing the cel. Ran to autozone and was told its the oxygen sensor detecting a rich condition. It basically means the PB Penetrant I used to loosen the bolt is still in the header from over spray. Its burning off and tripping the oxygen sensor. So in a few days of driving it should be fine.

You made me nervous so i went and looked. God I feel dumb, everything was great except the drain plug was a little loose. Tightened it up and she is good to go.
