As long as you don't have an SH, it can work with little modification but I highy recommend not to get it from the junkyard cause you don't know the condition it's in, plus it's recommended to change your struts every so often anyway. Pay a little more and know it's done and not gonna be problems 10 or 100 miles down the road.

I agree. Do it right first time, and you'll thank yourself down the road. Piece of mind is a great thing to have, but is sometimes rare when owning a prelude

Don't want to overpay for a shock is because the car is for sale and the shock just recently went out.what modifications would I have to do?I just need the shock it self without a spring

Re: 1996 vs 1997 suspension.

every 92-01 suspension part is interchangeable, except as previously stated, the SH parts. half of my front right suspension is from a 4th gen

Well, it's a strut, but like I said, little or no modification. It is interchangable but for some reason, people have issues sometimes but it's probably a result of them doing it wrong. There's people selling stock suspension all the time on forums and craigslist so you may be able to get it cheaper from one of them and actually know something about it that way when you sell it you aren't like "Uh, i put a strut on it from a junkyard and don't know if it's any good or not or how long it's been sitting there." You know how bitchy some buyers can be. It may be good when you sell it but it go bad the next day and regardless of any agreements, some will come after you anyway.
Also, depending on how long it's sat, make sure the **** isn't rusted out cause then it'd be really bad to put it on your car.
