H22a swap questions

I just bought a prelude a couple of weeks ago, and I haven't really found any clear answers out there. Will all H22 aftermarket parts work for this motor? i/h/e for the most part right now, but I'm also looking to change the timing belt and head gasket as well. Like I said I haven't really found a clear answer so thanks in advance guys!!

Re: H22a swap questions

I guess I should clarify. It's a 2000 lude with a JDM H22a. I'm not sure if it's OBD1 or 2. Today is the first time I've had any time to mess with it since I bought it.

Re: H22a swap questions

1992-1995 Honda Prelude are OBD1
1996-2001 Honda Prelude are OBD2a
1998-2002 Honda Accord are OBD2b

well it depends is it type s or not... with type s you might find few problems since it has ATTS
and if its JDM 220hp engine, you should be really careful what parts to change that they dont become a downgrade.

timing belt parts are all the same with 97-01 models jdm/edm/usdm

Re: H22a swap questions

Ok, so is there any easy way to tell if it's 1 or 2? And depending on the OBD I'm going to assume that the head gasket will be different. So, the timing belts are going to be the same, what about other aftermarket and/or maintenance parts? Sorry for the noobness haha but I don't wanna waste money on the wrong parts. Thanks

Re: H22a swap questions

yup difference heads gaskets since
92-95 closed deck OBD1
97-01 open deck OBD2

most of the maintenance parts are the same..exept engine internals have difference part numbers and those OBD1 H22 have difference injectors, ecus and things like that
H22A4 is more "advanced" engine than H22A1, but seals and so on are pretty much the same

aftermarket parts are generally for "92-01" preludes ....theres just differences that do you have SH or BASE prelude, you cannot mix some of their parts (like exhaust, suspension parts...)

Re: H22a swap questions

JDM engines are only marked as "H22A"
dont you know what year it has been manufactured... or then you can find it out from ecu wiring

Re: H22a swap questions

Gotcha, and nope that's why i was hoping for an easy way to distinguish it from OBD1 to OBD2.

Re: H22a swap questions

What about EGR valve? I believe I read somewhere those weren't on OBD2 cars.

Re: H22a swap questions

Its quite easy to tell man, But ill help ya out on this one =]

look at the dizzy (distributor) plug ins. the obd1 is going to be oval with 8 wires going to it and the obd2 is square with only 4 wires going to it.

OBD1 Dizzy

OBD2 Dizzy

obd1 on the left and obd2 on the right:

now, look at the dizzy that has been on your car since you got it. look at the holes where the bolts go through to hold the dizzy on the head. if the 2 top holes are oval and the bottom is a perfect circle then its obd2 but if all the holes are oval then its obd1.
obd1

another good way to find out is to take the dizzy cap off and see if there is a sensor on the top, right under the rotor. its going to look like a black box.

and yet another way to tell is to take the dizzy off and spin the piece that goes in the head that attaches to the cam. if it clicks every time you spin it a little bit its obd1 but if it clicks after you spin it half way then its obd2. also the obd2 dizzy is lighter then the obd1 dizzy.

There you are!
Enjoy =]
