thinking of buying a 2000 prelude

Hey,

New to the forums and have read the "buying a 5th gen prelude" sticky but still have a few questions it did not address.

Well, the background of the car is, as the 2nd and current owner of the car has stated, is as follows:

first owner threw a rod in his black 2000 lude
decided to try and make more money by parting out the car.

second owner bought "shell" and what was left of the black car (no interior other than dash, missing both bumpers and front quarter panels, hood/trunk) but did include the 5-spd tranny.

second owner owns another white 2000 prelude and used it as a "donor" car. it had been totaled from a side impact but the stock h22a with "73,000" miles was left intact but the auto tranny was shot.

SO he basically transferred the full interior, engine, and various body panels to complete the unwrecked black prelude. I went and looked at it today and it seems to be running fairly well, albeit with a slight pull to the right (im guessing the alignment is off) He is in the process of painting all the panels OEM nighthawk black but I went and saw it before he took the panels off to be painted. some interior pieces are missing as to be expected with a full interior transfer like that.

Just wondering what, if any, other questions I should ask and how I could verify the mileage/condition of the engine and transmission. he has since sold the white "donor" shell and could not verify the mileage of the engine with the odometer.

As I am typing this up it is becoming more and more of a red flag but if the paint looks good and I can prove that the condition of the engine is as is stated, then the asking price of $5000 may not be too far off.

Sorry for the lengthy write-up but the background of the vehicle/s is what makes this somewhat tricky.

I know people transfer/replace new engines into preludes all the time, but I wasnt sure as to the extent of this conversion. oh and btw, he claims to have done all the work by himself and seems fairly confident of his abilities. I on the other hand and somewhat skeptical.

Yea I agree with jdmluder... sounds like you might be buying someone else's headache. I would try to find another one. Plus for 5000 you can definetly get something the doesnt sound so shady.

^^ Agreed. $5000 is what you would pay for one that hasnt been torn apart and "rebuilt". Keep looking.

$5000's a ripoff for a rebuild like that man, check Craigslist and you might just find a legit one stock for cheaper!

Re: thinking of buying a 2000 prelude

As the writer of the "buying a fifth gen" Sticky, I'll say sorry it didn't address your specific issue. I'll agree also with jdmluder. Don't touch it with a ten-foot pole. There's too much margin for error with all that changed. Too many little things that could have been overlooked. I can almost guarantee you that you could find a better buy, especially for 5K. If it was 1K, I might consider it. But for 5 grand, you can definitely find a better prelude, no doubt. Check out Autotrader…That's where I found mine. Plus, you can narrow your search with price range, model year, etc.

Thanks man….had jimmynutz make it for me on the Sig thread. And Like I've said in other posts, I've been up to my neck in schoolwork, and the semester is winding down, so I'm able to find some time to get on here. I miss working on my car tho….jeez.

Re: thinking of buying a 2000 prelude

You can do better for $5000. I got mine in 07 with 103k miles, new tbelt, water pump, and tires for $5000 with mint interior. Just be patient and look at various prelude and Honda forums. Guys always gotta sell and at least with that, do some searching and you can often find what issues theyve had with the car. Good luck!

Patience is a virtue. It took me a year of searching to find my Prelude.

Don't forget to check Cars.com. That's where I found my '01 SH with only 76,000 miles.

Re: thinking of buying a 2000 prelude

Thanks for all the responses guys. The add didnt include the background story on craigslist and only listed the car as in "remarkable condition with only 77k miles" and when I drove an hour to go see it, he revealed the whole story. He has no verification of the actual miles of the engine. Some pieces of the interior are missing/broken. Its just not a good deal all around. Too many variables and as someone said, it could become "my headache".

Unfortunately time is not on my side as my 6g accord was totaled recently and am currently using a rental so I do not have time to search properly. But as they say, if things sound too good to be true, then they most likely are.

Thanks again for the input and any avenues where I could search for a prelude or any other comments are welcome.
